Numerous credit cards
« on: October 14, 2017, 12:50:55 PM »
If you have numerous credit cards without an existing balance. Say 4 bank ones and 3 store ones. What's the best thing to do if they're no longer needed. These are my wife's cards and we'll be using my main cc with points for almost all purchases. She had high balances but is now cc debt free!
- close x number of these accounts?
- set up a recurring payment like Netflix on the bank ones?
- keep or close the store ones?

Turn on alerts for any charge more than $1 and then sock drawer the cards to keep the average age of credit high.

I agree that closing accounts will hurt her credit score because it will lower the utilization percentage & average age.

However, I would close any with annual fees & all the store accounts. Definitely turn on alerts for the cards you keep.

I would slowly start cancelling the store cards.  Track the impact to her FICO and stop if the impact is too much.  Keep her oldest card.
