Nexus 5x phone
« on: December 22, 2015, 12:56:14 PM »
I have a Nexus 5X phone that I would like to start using soon. I currently use Republic Wireless and spend $10 a month for unlimited talk and text. I have access to WiFi at all times so I do not care about data plans.

My Republic Wireless phone broke and I do not want to spend money buying a new Moto phone.  I cannot find the tech communications superguide so I would like recommendations for cheap carriers. I am in the SF Bay area if that helps.

Thanks in advance!!

Have you looked into Google FI? If not, that is a good option. I have a Nexus 5, which isn't Google FI eligible so I'm on net10 which has a nice $35 per month plan.

I did look at Google Fi, but the charge is $20 per month for unlimited talk and text (which is $10 more than my current plan) and 10GB per month for data. Although I will be hardly using data, I would like the ability to occasionally switch on data for using Google Maps.

You'll be hard pressed to find a plan with comparable prices to RW I think.

The guide is stickied in the Share Your Badassity sub, and the unabridged version can always be found on my site.

P'tel does WiFi calling now if you want, and your 5x should support it (check at the link first). T-Mobile network. $20 for unlimited talk and text with 250MB of data. There's also a $20 unlimited talk and text with 100MB of data at Airvoice (AT&T), but doesn't have the fancy UMA/GAN support.

$20/month is your realistic bottom price point for mostly unmetered GSM talk and text on a T-Mobile or AT&T MVNO or any mobile carrier, really. The only way to get it cheaper is to go PAYGO or limited plans (such as with Puretalk USA - AT&T) and leverage VoIP while on WiFi as often as possible, which is basically all Republic is doing. Truphone SIM with either Google Voice/Hangouts and/or Localphone seems to be a good combo for going hardcore mobile minimalist, and isn't too difficult to set up.

It's not quite as detailed, but Maps.me is a totally offline maps app that works well. Plus, if you know Ahead of time that you'll need the more detailed google maps, you can cache them. Supposedly this feature is easier to use than it used to be.

Ha..Thanks, but I am directionally challenged. I blindly follow the Maps directions. If I take a wrong turn, I will be going in circles forever. And that isn't very mustachian, is it :P

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
