New Job Opportunity
« on: November 07, 2013, 11:42:50 AM »
Right now I work at a call center earning 12/hr plus commission. I hate the job. The money and the benefits are awesome. I don't want to quit because everything else except the job itself is amazing.

There's an opportunity that came up that might help. It's floor support (people walking around helping the people on the phones answering their questions, etc). I had a meeting yesterday with the floor support supervisor and he said the pay is a little bit higher averaging 17/hr but no commissions. The plus is unlimited OT. OT might not be as soul crushing if I'm just answering questions all day so I could use the hours to leverage what I'm losing with the commission.

Right now I am earning about $2400/mo take home after taxes, medical, dental, 401k, life insurance, etc.

My strategy is to apply and I can always go back to being a rep if the money offer is less than 17/hr. This position can also pave way to be a trainer which is my end goal career-wise.

Thoughts? Am I wasting my time considering this even?

Sounds like you should take it because a) there is the potential for more money and b) it will get you on track to what you eventually want to do. Just go for it, seems like you can always go back again. People often don't regret the things they did, just what they didn't do.

Don't settle for a job that you hate. Continue looking for new jobs/career paths until you find something that you truly enjoy. Life's too short to waste 40 hours/week on something you hate.

I just submitted my application. :) And I figured if they offer me something less than the 17/hr which is the average of what the other people in the same position earn they I can always say nicely "Thank you but no."

It will be an 8x5 and no two days off straight but I feel like getting off the phones would be a much needed change for me. I spoke to 2 floor support people and they both said I'll be perfect for it and that they enjoy their job. I want to enjoy my job. And even if it's 15/hr I might probably still take it cause I can work OT and 22.5/hr for OT ain't bad either.

Great, good luck! And it does sound like you would enjoy that more, I hope you get it! And if they don't offer you $17/h and you know that that's what others are getting, then before you say "no thank you", remember to negotiate! Be blunt with them and tell them that you want $17/h. Don't ask, don't get! :))

I do not see a downside to applying.  Go for it!

I was selected in a leadership program, no raise but kind of like being groomed to be a supervisor which according to my supervisor gives me a leg up in the support position. Cross in  my fingers since they're only looking for one support person at the moment.

Update!

One of the support people will be training a new hire class for four weeks and the supervisor asked me to step in. I can do unlimited OT and they will average my last 3 months' commission and best thing is I am off the phones for 4 weeks!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
