Hello my fellow Mustachians. Today my boss told me we have a position opened in another shop (retail shop), and they would like me to go since they checked the top managers of the country and they want me there. I love the idea of progression in career, however I just checked for the rent prices and its INSANE. Atm I am paying 20% of my liquid paycheck, saving 70% of my income after all expenses added. Now if I would accept the other proposition, the rent only would cost 55% of my liquid income, + 10% for all the expenses and the BONUS is I would probably have to buy a debt machine with 4 wheels since the shop they want me to go is really far from the urbanization. So I would basicly work for nothing.

How would you deal with the situation, should I straight up tell my boss my view on all this? How would you deal with the situation?

I am 24 M and have all accounted to retire before 40.

Thanks for all the answer, forgive my poor English

No. There is already other managers that are making the same as I will make.

Try to quantify all the benefits and not just the financial ones. A big qualifier is your perceived happiness/sadness in this non-urban environment as well as future potential opportunities with other companies in either setting. Based on your post, I would politely turn it down.

There are no rentals within biking distance? Sounds like you are trying to live in the city and commute to a more rural area in this new job.

How is this progression if this is the same job and same pay? Doesn't seem worth it if everything is the same except for location.

If there is that big of a COL disparity, there should be a raise just for COL. Based on what you've written, I would definitely not take the transfer.

Checked the nearest apartment for rent, it was 15 miles. I love to cycle, however we have strong winters where I live. And sometimes I start at 6 am, sometimes I leave at 12 PM.

Iīd love to work at a new place, and my only down point is really the price of rents. Thats just to much for me and it doesnt go with my mustachian lifestyle. It will also take almost 4 years to save what I now save in 1 year...

I think Iīll turn it down if they dont offer me any sort of compensation for the COL surplus.

I think you got the advice you need - now go have the conversation!

You thank your supervisor for considering you for the opportunity, however it doesn't make financial sense to accept the position (you don't need to give any more detail, keep it simple).

If you were really gunning to move to this new location, then you could try negotiating a salary raise, but if it's not something you're not super excited about, then just let it go.  Just because someone has offered you something, doesn't mean you have to accept it (or feel guilty or obligated or whatever).

Let us know how it goes.  Good luck!

I agree that you got the advice you need.  Tell them you're really flattered that they are thinking of you, but for reasons X, Y and Z, you will have to turn down the offer unless you can maintain your current COL ratio.

Are there other opportunities at that level in the area where you currently live?  Sometimes the only way to get a proper promotion, if that's what you want, is to change companies.

At your age, progression isn't only about money.  Taking cut in net pay in order to be positioned for future earning should also be considered.  I took a 50% pay cut once but it put me into the job type for later higher earnings potential, don't think too short sighted, is this is a position that might make your next step easier, it's worth the temporary net pay reduction.

UPDATE! : everything went better than expected. I talked with the Director, and after 3 hours he met with me and gave me the conditions.

So the usual talk about how he want me onboard but then out of nowhere, even if I didnt ask for something he told me:

I will get a 8% raise (bonuses also get 8% in correlation with the base salary)
1 Month of full salary to help with the house change
Since I will move out from my town I can rent a moving company and they will pay for it.
I can stay at the hotel 3 days all payed
They will pay my bus ticket to the new place (Would pay gas if I had a car)

AWESOME! I also got a cheap house that was from someone of the company that moved away. So I now earn more with more possibility to progress in the career! Live at half the distance from my home town then before.

So happy! :) Thanks for the ideas and share of opinions.

An 8% raise doesn't seem to make up for the COL disparity you highlighted in your OP? Is the house you are moving to a lot cheaper than your expected? Will you need a car now or no?

Yes it is. the raise will make up exactly for the diference. I found an house for much cheaper since the owner only rent for people from my company. Its only 2 minutes away from the company, thatīs walking! :)

Congrats. Now you have all the great things at once. Maybe it isn't so easy for your company to get another good person. Good that you talked the talk.
