Need fun ideas for t-shirts
« on: December 15, 2023, 05:53:07 AM »
My very mustachian DH virtually never asks for anything, so when he does, I jump to it, and I need help.

He works remote and his boss has taken to wearing a lot of fun t-shirts on days when they have no meetings except with each other, so DH would like more fun/clever shirts. Years ago I bought him this one, which he loves:

https://www.threadless.com/shop/%40threadless/design/the-communist-party

I'm not a fun/clever t-shirt person, so I wouldn't even know where to start. His boss wears a lot of Star Wars shirts, but DH isn't into Star Wars. He likes comic books, so that's always an option, but I'm hoping someone here has more original ideas. No software humour, the guy barely knows how to operate Gmail, and no video game references, internet meme, or science humour. Oh, and we're not American.

I feel like that rules out 99% of fun/clever t-shirts out there.

He has a background in philosophy and political science and works for the government in energy policy. Not exactly the funniest stuff, but he's an extremely funny person. He and his boss are both Gen X, so 80s references are a safe bet.

So if anybody you have specific fun/clever t-shirts you can think of, or even places I should be looking. I looked at Threadless where I bought the shirt above, but their humour seems to be geared towards a younger demographic. It's a lot of internet humour references that he wouldn't get.

Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help me out. I'm pretty good at finding things on the internet, but without a clear idea of what I'm looking for, I'm kind of stuck.

Any chance he is a Mythbusters fan?  https://www.redbubble.com/shop/mythbusters+t-shirts

I have this one. https://www.amazon.com/Drill-Adult-Graphic-Novelty-Sarcastic/dp/B07C9Z1P3T
There are lots of science-based ones https://www.amazon.com/Feelin-Good-Tees-Periodically-Science/dp/B00QSNK7Y2/

If you can find one topic/genre that is interesting, then Amazon and other websites will often give you lots of ideas from the "also purchased" suggestions (and you don't have to buy them from Amazon)

Or, if you would like a one-off inside joke shirt, you can use Canva to make your own. https://www.canva.com/t-shirts/My DD is making one for the spouse for the holidays.

The drill one is actually fucking hilarious because he is hopeless with tools, but I think it's funnier for me than would be for him.

Not a Myth Busters fan. I doubt he's ever seen the show. He's really not a science-y or engineering guy at all, which is funny given his area of work. So yeah, he would get the periodic table pun, but science stuff has no emotional valence for him, so it would be a flat pun.

But he does like puns. This morning he made an Eric Estrada pun, but I feel like pun shirts are going to mostly target humour that is more Millennial than Gen-X. I get a lot of the humour I see on t-shirts, but he's 50 and barely understands the internet.

Some of these are US energy policy, but even up north they know how ERCOT is, amiright?https://energyalabama.org/product-category/shirts/

He's in emissions reduction policy, but yes, some of these might work, especially the offshore wind ones. Extremely work appropriate.

Hmm...

So, more words than pictures?  Or, no?

Any favorite junk foods?  Old cartoons from childhood?

How about this?

Emissions reduction policy seems rife for humo(u)r, or at the least, fart jokes. Is he literary? Tilting at windmills (Don Quixote)?

I think that's a bit too American for someone who works for the Canadian government.

Pictures are great, especially if they're clever.

The thing with references like cartoons is that he and I are a decade apart and have VERY different early cultural references, so it's hard for me to intuit what references to look for, it's more like I'll know them when I see them.

He doesn't really eat much junk food, he doesn't drink alcohol, he's very fit and athletic, but not particularly into any specific activity, although he loves basketball, but not in a following sports kind of way. He's not really *into* any specific cultural things except comic books, but not Marvel of DCU movie/tv stuff.

Also, so much of the t-shirt humour out there though is misanthropic, which he absolutely isn't, he's the warmest human ever, so every joke about hating people or anything even remotely condescending is out, which seems to be A LOT of them.

I don't often come here asking for help, so you know I'm struggling with something when I do, lol!

He's into mountain biking, so that might be an avenue I could explore.

Not very literary, more philosophy, but if I could come up with a good emissions reduction joke, I could have something made. I'm terrible at jokes though.

Also, while his work does touch on renewable energy projects, those are mostly provincial and he's senior federal, so his actual work is bigger picture, like international trade systems. Its seriously arcane stuff.

I searched for funny Canadian tshirts and most of the results, unsurprisingly, do not seem remotely funny, but this one I found to be a mildly amusing visual pun.

https://www.redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/Pamplemoose-by-pangolily/16036288.240QL

ETA: Also, it occurred to me that “unsurprisingly” might be read as a dig on Canadians, but I just meant that it’s really hard to make funny tshirts that are actually funny.

I am not at all surprised by this.

ALTHOUGH!!!! Your statement has just inspired me because although humour about Canada is rarely funny, humour about Newfoundland is frequently fucking hysterical, so that's an avenue I can explore and we happen to know a guy who has a Newfie humour shirt company and makes them with extremely high quality, ultra soft cotton.

I haven't bought any of the shirts so far even though DH likes them because he's never worn schticky shirts and has generally exclusively worn merino wool, this new interest is a huge shift for him.

But this gives me several options, so thank you!

My philosophy friends all like Existential Comics. Their merch store has some funny t-shirts.

For the most absurd and inexplicable t-shirts, I like Snazzy Seagull. It's like meme humor, but apropos of nothing and the memes are just invented for the t-shirts. I have this one and somehow it's even funnier on a guy.

Teepublic has a lot of National Park-related/outdoor humor t-shirts; maybe there are some Canada-specific ones? I got my sister this one after a trip to Yellowstone:

I don't know what types of humor, but I bought myself a couple dad joke t-shirts recently I find fun

I'm not sure if dad like jokes are "in scope" here or not.

All of these may be places to look.  But some individual T's:

I think he might be a bit old for the 80s cartoon one, and he is the least condescending person ever, so unfortunately all shirts that imply he's smarter than others are out, which as I said earlier, kind of rules out the majority of joke shirts, lol.

Even the climate joke shirts linked above focus more on condescending climate change deniers, which wouldn't resonate with him. He doesn't have an ounce of condescension in him. He can be very sarcastic, but not condescending, which is unusual and makes it hard to find other sources of humour that are similar to his own.

He's very VERY funny, like makes me laugh out loud literally every single day, but it's just a unique humour it's hard to find other sources that are similar.

Not if they specifically say "dad jokes" because he's not a dad, and wouldn't consider his humour to be be "dad jokes."

Maybe too sciencey, but by the artist who wrote Ducks (Canada Reads winner - very, very good): https://topatoco.com/collections/kate-beaton/products/beat-curies
Shakespeare! https://topatoco.com/collections/ryan-north/products/qw-partying

You might also consider coffee mugs, which show up well on video calls. My favourite says "Good Cryptography Makes Good Neighbours", but I can't find it anywhere online (except here - but you can't buy from reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/HelpMeFind/comments/8lew7h/hmf_this_good_cryptography_makes_good_neighbors/). This one is kind of similar: https://topatoco.com/collections/ryan-north/products/qw-antidote-mug

I like this one: https://topatoco.com/collections/oglaf/products/og-craft

In general, I've had good experiences with Topatoco for shipping within Canada.

If his boss is into Star Wars, your husband might like this one. My DH has it. It’s funny when he is wearing it and meets new people: they end up being pretty evenly divided between thinking the shirt is hilarious and not being sure whether DH is serious and doesn’t know that the image is from Star Trek:

There was a newspaper cartoon in the ‘80s called “The Far Side”, and a quick Google search seems to indicate some of them are still being put to T-shirts.

And then while I was searching for those, one popped up with “Dark side of the loon” which seems apt for you.

One of my favorite genres of funny t-shirt is "Band Shirt but Wrong."

Examples one and two.

The best part of these is the absolute consternation they cause in a certain type of person. See also: Skyline shirts with the wrong city name underneath.

Far Side and Dilbert, all kinds of workplace humor.

The only thing with Larson (Far Side) is that he's very private and protective - so don't advertise too much in case you're a famous person if you make it yourself instead of licensed merch.  He's got an itchy lawyer-speed-dial-finger.

I find lots of funny/clever ones from ShirtWoot (they used to be an independent company called WOOT! that did all sorts of flash sales, and added in the shirt designs, but sold off to Amazon a while back). They print to order, prices are decent and generally they have a TON of unique designs by independent artists.

So far he likes this one

https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/691390683/renewable-energy-im-a-big-fan-renewable

And this one

https://crookedarse.com/products/this-blows-unisex-v-neck-t-shirt-1

Which is funny because he generally prefers graphics and visual humour, but I'm finding that none of the graphic t humour is quite the right fit for him. So puns it is.

Calvin and Hobbes has some philosophical cartoons. Don't know if he's a fan, nor how many words on the t-shirt are too many for him.

Now that is a good thought, he's very much like Calvin and his best friend is an orange striped cat.

So many t-shirts!

Another site for your consideration - https://retrokid.ca/. Generally not humourous but highly nostalgic for Gen X Canadians.

And a specific possibility from that site (though, of course, you'd have a better idea which CBC or TVO kids shows - if any - would resonate):

What a fun thread!
