Mustachians, lend me your power!
« on: February 26, 2014, 06:58:22 PM »
I can get a good discount. But I know I shouldn't spend! But Fluttershy is on the front...

I've been doing good with not getting random junk but when I come across something like this I falter... I need to get forum posted in the mouth apparently, mustachian style. Will someone please convince my brain that this is not worth it? lol Thanks (although I don't currently have a way to bring lunch to work or around school without using grocery bags >.>)

$17.99 plus a discount? If it's going to bring you enjoyment everyday then do it.

Other alternative: get a normal one from a tag/yard/garage sale (I don't know what they call them in CO but in New England they're called tag sales) and fix desired image to it.

Once in a lifetime. Once in a THOUSAND lifetimes.

That's how good that bag is. Look at those fucking ponies. Look at them. The coifs, the PERFECT hair. Notice how the bangs are being tossed in the wind of their imaginary planet. They even have goddamn WINGS. You can feel the essence of their being through the fabric of the bag, through the craftsmanship. They are equine angels.

Do you see the Yellow One's mouth slightly opened, calling for you? She needs you. The Others are the muscle. They add strength to the scene, but Yellow One... she's the true star. Pay attention to the eyes, the slight tilt of the head. the wings playfully fluttering. With every zip zip of that exquisite zipper, the bag imparts its otherworldly fineness to you. This is majesty. This is glory.

This is your bag. Believe it.

You have been given a visual treat. This is the epitome of Japanese artistry, the culmination of millenia. Thousands of artists have striven for what this bag achieves, each adding a brick of style, mortar of the most stunning complexity, needed to construct this fantastic shrine. A sublime rendering of ponies, amid a glistening, starry background.

MMM says not to buy things for enjoyment, because we need to learn where true enjoyment comes from, which isn't material objects. >.< But he didn't mention anything about MLP material objects >.> I could get a cheap on and put ponies on it somehow... I'm not that crafty though lol any ideas on how to do that?

I'm still trying to figure out what the Hell I'm looking at.

It's a lunch bag for almost $20 well, a little over 10 in my case.

I vote get it. It's a one time-purchase and it seems you're pretty stoked about it. But, watch out if you develop a trend of wanting to buy things like this.

Also, you can use a rule of waiting a week or month or whatever to see if you still want the thing in question. Maybe the bag won't be available for that long, but you can use the rule in the future.

MMM says not to buy things just for enjoyment, and to find enjoyment elsewhere in life which is exactly what he's done. It'd be nice to not use grocery bags for lunch, but he won't even get himself a nicer bike, ya know what I'm saying?

I'm currently trying to quit this trend and I'm also trying to start college, so that's why I'm asking for strength not to get it lol.

As awesome as the bag is, it will break within three months, and end up in the trash. Do not trash our planet.

Your reward for not purchasing the bag is this delightful photo of Sky Wishes, Pinky Pie, and Rainbow Dash (my favourite).

You can find enjoyment out of little things though that I would have to say can outweigh the cost (especially if discounted). It's on a much smaller scale than fancy cars, eating out constantly, buying expensive coffee, etc. If it's something you look at every day when at work/school and can be enough to get you through your day then I'd say it's worth it. The fact that it's unique can be a bonus, too, since you will be able to identify it easily.

Another one of MMM's philosophies is that you can be environmentally friendly by being frugal. A lunchbox trumps using grocery bags every day, especially plastic ones.

I don't know exactly how you could fix up a second-hand lunchbox. I'm not crafty at all. I would tape a picture of whatever I wanted lol. You could set your phone background to ponies if you wanted.

I try to use the mindset that this is art.  It speaks to me.  I will get immense enjoyment from looking at it right now.  Then I will go home and leave it in this museum.  And maybe get on Pinterest and look at beautiful pictures of ponies.
Don't buy it.  But enjoy it!

It doesn't seem cheaply made, I'm more concerned about OK, here is a pony bag what if I find a pony this or a pony that where does it end? Thanks for the pictures of the classic ponies cute lol.

That's true, it is more environmentally friendly. Does that justify it though? I mean, does that really really justify it? I could get another bag just as sturdy from a thrift store or even make one for mere pennies, much less than any 20 or if I'm lucky %40 discount.

It is definitely art :) I'll bet there is a way to like, impose pictures of ponies or stencil them onto another bag and have a unique one that I made, which actually sounds cooler than just buying one. How to do that is the question...

Hi there,
take your time contemplaining about the question wheter you would need everything that looks nice/appealing.
Dervice your joy from watching that bag, allow yourself to enjoy it. Truly enjoy the warm feelings you get when looking at it.

Then accept the fact that it is not responsible to buy it unless you have a strong need for its usecase (here: carrying stuff from A to B) and no better overall solution (another, more durable bag, perhaps a bigger one, or the one you already own).

I think the problem here is that marketing and consumerism is tempting us to want everything we like. We virtualy want to "buy those feelings" and that is scientifically proved impossible to achieve. It is the rosetta stone of modern marketing and one of the main reasons we are keep buying things we do not need. It is not the item we buy, it is the feelings we want to own, not seeing that at the moment we feel them, we already posses them for free.

That is absolutely true, everyone here who has advocated for me buying it has talked about enjoyment, but you should be able to have more than enough enjoyment in your life without having to buy anything. Although it worked in reverse psychology, by explaining a counter point to them I convinced myself more. So it worked! But I don't think I'll be buying anything I describe to myself as "enjoyable" anymore (not often, at least. Gotta have beer, right?). If I feel like I need to make a purchase in order to experience enjoyment (beyond enjoying things like eating everyday and not sleeping on the street, etc) I'll step back and ask what I'm not getting else where that I"m trying to get from here.

Damn, now I really don't want that bag Lol.

Although I'm not generally sexist (as far as I know), I'll say that I think you should buy it if you're a burly guy. Especially if you're 50+ and work at locations that are generally described as the "site" or "field."

sew a black canvas rolltop bag, trace and cut out a stencil, and throw down some pink spray paint for the punkest pony lunchbag ever

Tobi, why not look on it as the thing you do to make sure you bring lunch to work every (which if it lasts for more than a year will justify the cost over meals out).

If you don't bring lunch you'll disapoint Fluttershy and there are levels of hell for people who do that....

Lmao oh my god. Well, I do have other ways of carrying lunch, but I think I'll find a way to stencil or paint miss Fluttershy on so that she doesn't have to be disappointed lol.

If MMM was able to deny himself this amazing one-of-a-kind handmade leather drinking flask (which quite possibly could be the coolest thing ever created by mankind in the whole history of the universe and only cost $10), I'm quite sure you can deny yourself a mass-produced-in-China pony bag.

I keep hoping my Wife's thoroughbred will mysteriously drop dead.. Then I can rent out the rest of our pasture and barn...:)

Frank

In the movie GIANT, the husband just shoots his wife's stallion, saying it had a "broken leg."

It's ugly. (Thank you for the link :)

Cheaper than a real pony. Ask me how I know.

I just got rid of all my real ponies last year :( Moving back to the city will be cheaper, though.

Oh my gosh, Frank!! You've always been so sweet and then all of a sudden you want a horse to die Lol. How did this thread start on death wishes for equines, anyway?
But I don't think I'll be buying anything I describe to myself as "enjoyable" anymore (not often, at least. Gotta have beer, right?).

Damn, now I really don't want that bag Lol.

If you are willing to trade your beer money for the bag it's totally worth it. :)

I traded my beer money for shoes, this is extra >.> But I'm actually over the bag and now I want a dress and this one top that is a shade of green that looks good on me which is exciting because green never looks good on me!

It is not the item we buy, it is the feelings we want to own, not seeing that at the moment we feel them, we already posses them for free.
I love this!  It is so true, and so well said.
Also, Krieg, you light up my life.  You give me hope to carry on.

That line that's glowing. Not in the budget this month. I'm going to ask--have you put yourself a "fun money" line in your budget? Initially (for me), it was very hard to stick to a budget that didn't allow me to indulge a little. I put $10-20 or so aside every payday and then when I wanted to buy something that wasn't in the budget I looked at my "fun money". If I had the money and wanted to spend it, great! If not, it had to wait until I got the money. And, since I didn't spend the money every week, I got to save up for bigger purchases (video games, computer bits).

Honestly, I should go back to that.
