Mustachian Lottery Winners and Giveaways...
« on: November 18, 2015, 04:39:26 AM »
I haven't seen a post yet about Mustachians who have won lotteries, giveaways, gameshows, competitions (with cash prizes or cars etc.) McDonald's monopoly game etc...

Has anyone won any thing significant?

I would wager that most folks who follow a mustachian lifestyle, probably realize that the lottery is simply a tax on the poor and a tremendous waste of money.

I know there are some who visit casinos - they probably approach it as simply a line item on the 'entertainment' section - bring $300 for entertainment, gamble away $300 - when finished, leave/find free entertainment. Whether they win a lot or not - that I don't know. I DO know that they don't build those giant casinos and provide free drinks and free food and upgrades by giving away money though :)

Yeah guessing by the lack of response, maybe your righT. Although ii wasn't asking if this is something people engaged in regularly. I find it hard to believe no one has ever been in a raffle or sweeptakes (i didn't mean just the lottery)Maybe just don't want to share.

I have a coworker who is obsessed with this stuff - multiple times per week bingo, scratch tickets, radio call-ins ("be the Nth caller, win $500!"), slot machines - I always hear about the big wins ($200 on a scratch ticket, $100 at the casino slot machines, $600 at bingo) - but like most gamblers, you never hear about the (much more frequent) big losses.

She is religious about the radio call-ins though - she's won quite a bit of money on those (since I've worked with her, she's won $500 once, and $100 at least three times) - those seem harmless (well, they all seem harmless if you can afford it/it's a form of entertainment and is treated as such)

Myself, when I was much younger I had won a free snowboard in a free contest and $1000 through an essay contest - I don't tend to be 'lucky' with winning, so I usually avoid that stuff like the plague :)

I'm getting free lunch at work today which makes me feel like I won the lottery! I already packed a lunch so I am saving it for tomorrow now.

I have a co-worker that regularly plays bingo and dishes out a crazy amount of money on it. He won $2,800 last weekend but most of it is gone already.

My friend's dad gave me $20 to play in a casino once. I won $200 and had only spent $5 to get there.

When I was a kid, I won a Playstation game and a pack of trading cards from Kids WB. Of course, I entered every hour on the hour for weeks straight. :)

+1.... only do it on rare occassion for the dopamine rush.

If I had FU money, I could see myself going to the casino more often.  I go 0-1 a year now.

Anecdote:
A man prayed every day all his life to god: "please god help me win in a lottery". The man dies eventually, goes to heaven and asks god: "i prayed all my life and you didn't help me?". God answers: "i tried my best, son, but have you thought about purchasing a lottery ticket ONCE?" :)

I won a $100 dinner at a fancy restaurant from the radio once.  I was refinishing a table and had the radio on.  For about 15 minutes I decided that I was going to enter tons of stuff while at work because "what does it hurt" but then I thought about all the spam I'd get and didn't do it.

Oh, and the best thing I ever won (also from the radio, listening at work) was lunch and some number of chips (I forget) for me and my coworkers (~15 people) at a casino boat in Illinois.  My coworkers thought I was great.  I was under 18, but nobody ID'd.  I was the only minor.  And I won like $30 playing some table game -- Let it Ride, maybe?

In my early twenties I won a pair of Prince tickets from a New York radio station.  Sixth row seats at Madison Square Garden.  AWESOME show.

I have officially been told I am going to be on game show in the near future. DW is 100% certain I will win big and can put the money towards a down payment for a house.

Me, I make plans around worst case scenarios so all I see are travel expenses and the taxes I will pay on the minimum amount you can win :)

When I was 7, I answered a trivia question on the radio... "Who was Charlie Brown's idol?" and I got it despite the fact I mangled his name into "Joe Gargonzolla." I was actually more excited about having my name announced on the radio than winning the prize.

I won a Wendy's salad coupon (fast food establishment that actually used to have a pretty decent build-your-own salad bar back in the day). Which was never used, because no one in my family would take me to pick it up. :)

Otherwise, no. Never won anything lottery- or raffle-like (and did play a bit in my teens and 20s)

I won one of those "guess how many jelly beans are in this jar?" Games in kindergarten.

I won a guitar from an arcade in Vegas (from dart throwing).

Edited to add that actually I did win a raffle! At a board game convention, I won a drawing for some new board games and a themed hoodie (pretty darn comfy).

I'm some kind of idiot savant for those things. I've won 3 out of 4 "guess how many X in the jar" contests that I've entered in my life. And it's possible I won #4 as well and the teacher just didn't want to give both prizes to me, since there were two going at the same time. (Parenting pro-tip: Teach your kid to calculate the volume of a cylinder at a very young age and you will eat a lot of free jelly beans.)

Other than that I've won $100 in a random drawing, $150 worth of concert tickets to Winter Jazz Fest, and about $500 worth of in-game prizes in some game I used to play because the admins apparently failed to notice that their random number generator was broken, and I won all of the once-a-year grand prizes on every server simultaneously.

One time in college there was this website where you could win points by playing a virtual slot machine online.  Every point entered you into a contest.  Well I wrote a script that would play the slot machine 24/7.  I won a free Josie & the Pussycats poster.  They never sent me the poster, though.

Had to think back...

I won a $100 at an event. It was a nightly giveaway... you put your receipts from the local stores, with your name on the back. Well, I went out and found a ton of receipts... and filled the box.

I won the first night.

The second night.... They announced that for the first time ever, someone had not played fairly, and that those entires were removed (I put in 200+ receipts) But my brother won, except you had to be present to win... and he was off doing who knows what. So just the one $100. Still was pretty cool, I was 12 I think.

As far as contests... I have done well at various Guitar and Mandolin contests. I have won around $20k over the years.

Won Bryan Adams tickets back in 99? by calling in to a radio station.  Sold them on Ebay.  I was 17 at the time and only knew who he was because I had seen Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

About a month ago I happened to be near a Fire Department that was doing an open house and someone there pressured me into filling out a free raffle ticket.  I got a call the next day and found out I had won a Bose Soundlink Color...  sold it on Ebay as well.

My wife though... super lucky:
Landed on Free Parking 16 times in one Monopoly Game!
Won a free trip to LA, including a party with the cast of Jersey Shore (she didn't watch the show or care about the cast, but got a free trip/drinks out of it).
Won a mountain bike (2nd prize, she was going for the winery tour trip that was 1st prize).
Won a trip to Vegas

I was selected by the camera that zooms over the audience as Bozo the Clown's special pal when I was on a fieldtrip with my Girl Scouts troop.  I won some games and a lifetime supply of bubblegum.  Luckily this was before I watched the clown episode on "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" and the movie "It."  My parents didn't buy any Halloween candy for a few years.

I also completed some sort of promotional scavenger hunt for the 2008 Indiana Jones movie at our local theater and won a treasure box worth $15k.  It had a bunch of gift cards, two free annual movie passes, and a one-week condo stay.  That was probably the most exiting out of all the random small stuff I have won over the years.

Biggest win was a trip to Englang and a VIP lounge to an EPL match. Really nice hotell++ , worth ca £4500. But several of the others was in the £1500-2500 range

I won a Christmas stocking at a raffle once, and also ballet tickets and NBA tickets from a radio call in.

My mom does the local radio call in thing, and she wins something almost every other month. Usually tickets to local shows or sporting events and takes my nephew. Makes an excellent grandma date!

When I was a kid I won some stuff, Probably the biggest was a grill set from a grocery coloring contest. My most prized possession was a Games tshirt won from a decorating an envelope when in HS. There was some random times I found money, like $20 in a parking lot and $10 on the floor of a bar.

My little brother used to enter art and poster contests and won hundreds of dollars in either cash or prizes.

My husband actually seems unlucky (he couldn't win even if he was 1 of 2 people in the contest), but his siblings, one won their entire wedding, another was chosen to be in commercial with $$ attached and separately won a weekend trip for free.

The most I ever won from a lottery ticket was $75 or so, from a ticket my Dad bought me for xmas, I think it was for 4 matched numbers. I was kind of bummed it wasn't for more.

I won one of those "guess how many jelly beans are in this jar?" Games in kindergarten.
When I was in elementary school we had one of these, but it said, "no counting."  So I estimated the height and width, and multiplied out for my guess.  The teacher then asked me how I got so close in front of the class, so I told them, then we got in this huge debate whether or not I "counted."  I think I eventually got it.  I remember the argument better than the result.

That's the spirit Teach! Don't reward logic and smarts, instead try to penalize it and reward random guessing!

I also won a Scholarship by entering my art in a local arts festival while a Senior in High School. That was a lifetime ago. In my art studio I STILL have the little sign that was posted by my entries on display at the festival that year. I do have a dream of some day entering that festival as an adult, I just never get around to it.

I've won numerous "day off with pay" at my employer over the last 19 years. The last one I won a raffle a week ago and I am taking it TOMORROW!

Once on a 3 day cruise to Ensenada Mexico, I did the nickel slots on the ship and won $50. I was thrilled!

I have over the years randomly entered the game where you get numbers for the local football team's scores each quarter. I've won the pot a few times.

I am just lucky enough I should by lottery tickets but never do for myself, however, sometimes we will get scratch tickets for stocking stuffers. I don't think my luck has rubbed off on any recipients.

One year (fifth or sixth grade probably, mid 90s) I won some raffle or drawing at the local play-it-again sports store, getting $300 in store credit which was a lot of money in those days. It was summer and I lived near the beach, so I walked out of there with a surfboard, boogie board, wet suit, full snorkeling gear set, and a whole bunch of other stuff. At the end we added up the total and it came to 299.50; the clerk threw in two bars of surfboard wax and called it even.

The real lesson from that was that you can get used sporting goods from the consignment store way cheaper than buying them new, and most of the time they are just as good!

My grandmother enjoys a good casino trip from time to time.  When I was 14 or so I gave her a dollar to gamble for me, which was probably illegal now that I think about it.  The dollar didn't even make it to Atlantic City, as the people on the plane wrote their names on a dollar and put it in a bag.  The one drawn out got the pot.  She put my dollar in and won $75.  My dad was convinced it was going to turn me into a gambler.   As it turns out, I can hardly even buy a $1 raffle ticket!

I won a full ride undergrad. Entries were based on applications and test scores, but the finalists' competition was an essay. Tuition, fees, and books for  four years, so I think I've used all my luck up.  Also, I sent my senior English teacher flowers.

Reminds me of our first trip to Vegas. My parents took us on a driving vacation out to SoCal and the Grand Canyon and all that. We spent one night in Las Vegas just as a convenient stopping point, the hotel we stayed in had a casino attached (of course). We were waiting in line for a restaurant for dinner and it was right by some slot machines. My brother and I were begging my dad to play one so we could see how it worked, and because it looked really cool (I was maybe 10 or 11). Parents were very anti-gambling and didn't want to do it, but we were relentless and my dad finally agreed to put in a quarter with a comment along the lines of "fine, I'll throw away a quarter and then you can see how you lose money gambling."

So of course he puts the quarter in and the whole thing lights up and money starts pouring out of the machine and going all over the floor. My brother and I were so excited. End result: we ended up wasting it all on arcade video games (because it was all in quarters) and learned a terrible life lesson.

I recently heard a really heart-warming story among my circle of acquaintances. Someone's grandfather won millions in the lottery. He'd lived a pretty simple life up until that point and opted to make few changes. For example, instead of renting a place for a week in the south during winter, he increased his time there to 3-4 weeks (same rental, though -- no upgrade to anything more luxurious.) He offered some nice gifts to family members, but nothing terribly over the top. Like he had a sister who'd worked hard all her life as a waitress but had never been able to afford to buy a home on that income. So he bought her a modest house in the community where she'd lived for years and years. As he ages, he is contemplating whether to make more gifts while he is alive or to let the fortunes be passed down through his will on his death. The man sounded quite mustachian indeed.

My kids won this kind of game once. There was a label on an identical jar not far away that they spotted...it had the exact number on it.

Mustachian Lottery Winners and Giveaways...

My wife was on wheel of fortune and won like 11k cash and a trip valued at 8k (by far the most lavish vacation I've ever taken).  But that wasn't "random luck" like a lottery.

Those of you who have met her (Camp Mustache and other meetups) can probably picture her on WoF based on her personality.  :D

She's also won a kindle fire tablet in an in person drawing, and a used htc flyer tablet from a blog drawing.

I can't recall anything I've won, besides the whole life lottery.

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Awesome!  I have a friend who was on last season and won a car in the main game plus a good deal of cash (including winning the bonus round).

After graduating from college I went out with some friends for beers and played a Keno ticket that won me $1000. It was a good day.

Wife is a corporate meeting/event planner. Sales reps for vendors will come in and pitch their airline, hotel, etc. Usually its nice because she can call up contacts to get deeply discounted rates on those types of things when we do travel.

This time, Air Emirates came to visit and they had a drawing for two round-trip tickets to Dubai. She won. We will be going next year. The tickets are auto-upgraded to business class if available, and you better bet we will be calling up the rep to find out which flight gives us the best chance for that

We usually find ourselves in Vegas once a year for a semi-cheap long weekend. Plane tickets are $250 total for 2 round trip tickets. The wife doesn't gamble and I tend to play a bit a bit of blackjack.

The last few times I have won over $2,500 each time and I only bring a fraction of that to lose, so I will be ahead for many years to come (assuming we keep going, which is unknown)

The money lost, or won isn't enough to really warrant any change or celebration in life so we just put it back in the bank it came out of and move on.

That's the spirit Teach! Don't reward logic and smarts, instead try to penalize it and reward random guessing!

The kids that guess have no clue how to estimate, either.  We have had a guessing jar weekly during Summer Reading Program at my library, and the majority of kids guess "100" or "1000", regardless of what is in the jar.  We always made sure the actual number was nowhere near even.

That said, last spring BOTH of my boys at home won jars of jelly beans at different places.  We had > 5000 jelly beans.  The really big container had all sorts of different one mixed together - there must have been some Bertie Botts ones in there too.  But none of my favorite spice ones!

My sister was really good at the jelly bean guessing, we got massive amounts on several occasions.

In kindergarten, I won a huge box of Crayons. Like a briefcase style box.  I didn't run out of Crayons until college.
