Moving to CO, Looking for Housing Advice
« on: July 06, 2018, 02:30:51 PM »
Some details:
Family of 4, kids are 13M and 10F
Husband is being transferred to Florence, CO from TX
We are primarily looking for housing in Canon City because Florence is tiny.
Timeline: 3 weeks
Desire to rent a 3 bd
Town is small and options are limited - I found exactly one apartment community that has 2 bedrooms (rather than one) which is not rent controlled
Rents for a 3 bd duplex/ house seem to range from $1100-1400
Rents for the 2 bd apartment (we are on the waiting list and it is unknown if it would be available in time) are $850
We found a 3 bd mobile home in park for $43K, space rent is $450.  If we paid cash, it would take 5 years to break even with renting a place for $1100 but cash flow would be better.

Specific question:  Where should I live?

What say you?

Consider moving to Colorado Springs, Fountain, or Pueblo. Way more options and should be similar price ranges, but your husband will have to commute. I assume your husband will be working for the prison out there?

If commuting is out of the question...good luck. Canon city is a small town and therefore the inventory is going to be pretty slim.

I'd rent the 3 bedroom duplex, and reevaluate after a year. I wouldn't want too much of a commute, especially at first, because winters can be pretty crummy there.

Update:  I found a nice little rental in a good spot, thanks for the advice and confirmation.

Wonderful! Head over to Pueblo one of these days. They have an awesome drive in movie theater and kids under 12 are free, plus it’s only 9 bucks for 2 movies first run. We like to go and make a long evening out of it: bring picnic food and a football and just relax and have fun before the movies start.

Will do!  DH loves Drive-ins.  I've never been but it sounds fun.
