Most affordable way to rent a truck?
« on: March 15, 2019, 07:46:31 PM »
Any of you have no vehicle or just a car and sometimes are in need of a truck to pickup a piece of furniture etc?  Maybe you don't want to pay the $50 they charge to deliver it.   Is there any place which will rent a truck for a couple hours say for $25 or less?    I'd pay $25 to borrow a truck every so often, to pick up things from home improvement store or furniture.   I have been asking my brother and giving him $10 for gas, but I don't like to bother him.  I have been thinking about getting a truck, but then I start thinking about depreciation, repairs, insurance and licensing.

Check out the local u-haul prices, they rent small standard trucks. Home Depot or Lowes may possibly rent them as well. I think $25 for a few hours will likely be pushing it on the price, but if you don’t need it very often it’s probably still a better deal than buying.

I rented a pickup truck from Home Depot to move a new dining room table. I think it was $25 or $35/hour.

Yes, Home Depot and Lowe's will rent you a truck, as will U-Haul. We usually wait until we have several things we need to shift around.

Thank you for the replies!  Amazing! I just called Home Depot Tool Rental department.  They offer Load-N-Go rental of flatbed truck.  It's $19 (plus sales tax) for the first 75 minutes and $5 for every 15 minutes after that.  That's a really good deal!  I imagine I can do most things I'd need to do with a truck within that 75 minutes.

Most affordable is to do a favor for a friend with a truck - it sounds like you found your answer already but since this is MMMland I wanted to add that to the thread.

Make sure you're comfortable with your insurance coverage. While your own insurance should cover you while renting from a normal car company, I believe it often does not cover you while renting from Uhaul, and I'm not sure about Home Depot. It might depend on the type of vehicle you rent (maybe a pickup truck would be covered, but a box truck not covered). I don't know the details, I just know I've been led to believe normal car insurance doesn't cover Uhaul box trucks.

Be aware that UHaul and Budget have a LOT of fees on top of the price they tell you up front.

I asked Home Depot if there were any other fees and they said no, just sales tax -- which is excellent! :). Also, they told me to bring my proof of insurance.  So they will use my auto insurance if something happens.
