Most affordable way to cash in a bunch of change?
« on: April 09, 2023, 05:07:13 PM »
I have a couple jars of change that has been sitting around here for years and would like to deposit in the bank.  What is the most affordable way to convert this to bills?  It's been a while, but last I knew the machines at Walmart for turning change into bills took something like a 10% cut?  Don't know what it is now.  Would be nice to somehow do this for free or maybe a few percent fee instead of 10%.

My credit union has a change counter and if you are a member it’s free. Check with your bank and see if there are any branches around that have one.

I think the Coinstar machines won't take a cut if you get a gift card to one of their affiliated merchants.

You could also just spend it a bit at a time.  I use the coin acceptors in self checkout lines at the grocery store.

It may be worth making sure there aren't any silver coins in there (old dimes, quarters, half dollars, maybe others).  They're worth more than face value and you can sell them at gold and silver brokers.

I've always just headed to my local bank branch. Not all of the branches had coin counters, though, so it pays to call ahead.

My credit union charges for the use of their machine, so I just spend the coins.  But you could also ask for coin wrappers and do it yourself, then deposit them in your account.

You can roll it and deposit it, which is a bit boring but you can do it while you watch tv.

And you can dump it in the coinstar machine and get Amazon credit and then they don’t charge you a percentage.

A lot of banks don't have coin counters anymore, so you have to roll them. Or start paying in coins for a while.

Thanks for all the tips. Amazon gift card sounds fine from the coinstar marchines.   Also I like the idea of using the coin receptacle in self checkout at walmart. I can bring in a small cup at a time and feed a bunch in.

Just remember you can flip the lid to the coin slot like this: https://www.thriftyfun.com/Paying-with-Coins-at-Self-Check-Out.html

BJ's has coinstar like capabilities at their self checkout kiosks when you go buy something......it's not rocket science, just spend the money as you would bills.

The local fruit and veggie stand is the only place I routinely pay in cash, because they take nothing but. So after all the change they give me accumulates to the point where it's making my pocket too heavy, I pay for my groceries there with a bunch of coins. They're the reason I have all these useless coins, so they get to put up with me holding up the line to get rid of them.

My H goes to a store like home Depot or target and does the self check out. He unloads a jar of coins per trip, and then pays with a CC for the rest. He only does it at non busy times so no one is waiting. At least for awhile the stores were actually needing coins so we figured win win. Now he has gotten his stash down and does it a lower volume of coins (pocket ful).
