Mold at parents work
« on: July 05, 2021, 07:06:41 AM »
My mom has historically poor health due to lifestyle and really unfortunate genetic condition. She’s made more of an effort the last few months and has lost some weight and is looking a little healthier. She still is rather young though (had me really early).

She has had persistent respiratory issues for over half a year now. She has had almost a dozen negative tests of Covid, so we know it wasn’t that. It has gotten bad enough where she developed pneumonia and she is still recovering. She gets sick easily, but this is far beyond the norm.

I’m not sure what prompted to due this or why she hasn’t noticed before, but she inspected the window at her work and noticed a huge amount of mold in and around the window. It’s hidden from view but quite extensive when you get a good look. She ended up inspecting the ducts into her office and noticed a huge growths of mold in there as well.

She raised the alarm bell to her employer, who shrugged it off and said that they have seen that before and the spore tests usually come back negative. They have been dragging their feet getting it tested and still expect her to work in that office. Is it possible that the mold might be leading to persistent respiratory issues? Is there any options to consider in this situation? .I told her she shouldn’t work in that space until it’s proven safe. I was quite furious they would keep someone in an environment that could be unsafe until it’s “proven safe”.

Was she able to work from home at all with covid?

Did those issues go away then?

What did her doctor say when she mentioned all of these things to them?

OHSA?

Sounds like an anonymous tip might be in order here. I am sure there is some regulatory agency that even the mention of an inspection would get a commercial cleaning crew there pronto.....

Can your mother do anything to increase the ventilation or air conditioning?  Mold is an indication of either a badly built or maintained building or inadequate ventilation for the number of people working in the building.

No she couldn’t work from home normally. When she did get sick however she was able to, but wasn’t home long enough for it to go away.

I think that’s the issue. Her particular office has really poor ventilation.

Sheesh !   People see a little mold and get all freaked out about health hazards.
Just get someone at work to clean up the office good with bleach and run a fan in there to improve ventilation.
I'm sure her employer doesn't want employees jeopardizing their health.

It may be as simple as an allergy to mold - I've had this problem at home after a leak in my rental apartment. It was giving me asthma as well as sinus congestion and coughing. Taking Xyzal helped my symptoms a lot (different meds may work for different people, that's what worked best for me). Worth a shot to see if she can get temporary relief with OTC meds while working on a long-term fix.

Bleach is the wrong thing to due in case of mold.  Plain white vinegar is much better.

OP, there are testing kits available for mold.  She could purchase one and see what it says.  And then report to OSHA.  She should also talk to her doctor about the situation and see what he recommend, as well as whether he thinks that some kind of allergy med might be worth a try.  .

There is a long and disreputable history of employers jeopardizing the health of their employees whenever they can get away with it.

"usually"?? This is a red flag. The employer didn't say the test "always come back negative."

It’s really really hard to fail a spore test. There would have to be more mold inside than outside which is a really high bar unless someone is growing a ton of plants in the office. My old employer did spore tests on a regular basis and there was sometimes a little mold inside but it was always far less than the amount outside.

That said, if there’s visible mold, the employer should clean it up. Calling osha is an option that would force the employer to do the spore test and clean, but the outcome might be disappointing. In the meantime, check into a mold allergy and consider getting an air purifier with a HEPA filter for her office to see if that helps. Also ask the doctor what it could be.
