I don't really know what i gotta do all to maintain a mountain bike that i commute with... everything is stock from when i bought it 4 years ago... a Marin mountain bike... in the front where the chain gets pushed onto the next gear there is a slight rubbing sound that's new...any suggestions?

like Russ said, you need to adjust your high and low limit screws on your front deurallier.

google some instructions for "Adjust front deurallier"

Before you adjust anything check if the front chainrings are straight.  I banged one hard enough to bend it a bit once and it took me FOREVER to figure out that this was the problem, not the derailleur.

If it's an indexed shifter, meaning you click it and the derailleur moves, then try adjusting the derailleur first. You may need to tighten the cable, though, as sometimes too much slack will cause improper shifts. If you haven't had it tuned up in 4 years and are riding it quite often, it's probably time for a basic tune-up at your LBS. It's not mustachian and I've never done it, but paying $40 for someone to go through everything and take care of issues that may not have arisen yet, may make sense for some.

Yeah, you may want to look at slightly adjusting your derailer.  However, if it's only the slightest rub, you may not want to do anything.  Does it happen in all gears?  Or only one or two?

My bike chain hits my derailer when I'm in gear 2-7, but in no other gear, so I haven't done anything about it.

Side note:
Have you guys seen the Sheldon Brown derailer vs. derailleur

meh. cycling is full of outdated or semi-useless traditions.

I just thought it was entertaining.  I don't care how anyone spells it.
