I am in the market for a new mattress.  I've always wanted a Tempurpedic memory foam mattress.

Anybody have experience with this type of mattress?

Are there better alternatives?

Costco novaform...I just purchased one a few months ago.  The Queen was $400 on sale in the store and is a consumers report best buy and has a 20 year warranty.

I'm also looking for a mattress and didn't even think to look at Costco.  Did you also buy the bed frame/base from Costco?

Do you really need a mattress at all?  Have you spent any length of time sleeping on a couple blankets on the floor?  After a couple weeks you might be surprised at how comfortable it is to get a good night of sleep without springs and foam.

I am going to agree. I got it because of CR combined with Costco's return policy (not that I want to lug it there...). It took me a week to get used to it, but my husband and I love it!

Blankets?!?

Why spend good money on blankets when you can get all the sticks and leaves you need in the park for free?

Sticks are too uncomfortable, and the leaves dry out and lose fluffiness after a day or two.  Assuming that it takes you half an hour to gather the garbage bag of leaves necessary to cover the floor after a day (assuming you live next to a forest with an inexhaustible supply of leaves), then an additional half an hour to meticulously go through the leaves and remove spiders (because fuck spiders), then a half an hour to clean up the old leaves on the floor . . . you don't get significant benefit from using leaves.

But seriously though, sleeping on the floor is very comfortable.  I've slept in beds that gave me back pain, but never had it from sleeping on the floor.  People waste a lot of money on mattresses every year . . . usually without even trying the alternative.  That's just lazy.

I've spent much more than a couple weeks in my life sleeping on things less comfortable than a nice mattress, which is why you will pry my nice mattress from my COLD DEAD HANDS. ;)

I sleep on a Serta that I picked up from Sam's Club (which I joined for the express purpose of buying this mattress, after having laid on it and found it heavenly). The best thing I can recommend is to get yourself on as many mattresses as possible and see what you like and don't like.

I already had the frame and headboard.  The previous mattress was 12 years old and shot.  I love this mattress!  Well worth the money and I sleep through the night with no more back problems in the mornings

Got a king size Casper mattress for $900.  Sleeps similar to my parent's $2,500 mattress for a fraction of the price.  You can also try Tuft and Needle, Purple and Leesa.  They all offer similar products, all with 100 day trials.  Don't like it within that timeframe and you can get a full refund.

I used to linebackers on the floor. Stopped working for me.

My favorite mattress is any cheap mattress topped by the Ikea memory foam topper.  I think for double you can get the combination under 400, not sure about queen

Going to keep an eye on the Novaform from Costco - thanks for the recommendation! DH has struggled with bad neck and back pain and our last "screaming hot" mattress deal from Sears has just been so-so. been trying new pillows and he's still hurting. So we have been seriously considering Costco because of the generous return policy. Alternatively, I have a photo on my phone of a bed he tried (and liked) from a recent hotel stay.

I have a Costco Novaform mattress too, which I bought two years ago. It's holding up well and is nice and comfortable, but (like any foam mattress) it insulates very well. My wife thinks that's great, but if I had to do it over again I'd go for a cooler traditional spring mattress (probably a "Classic Luxury Firm" from The Original Mattress Factory, which was the runner-up choice).

We haven't replaced a mattress new ever (thanks family members constantly moving, and upgrading to larger bed sizes! I WILL take your barely used full for $25, thanks!). That being said, I've heard good things about the mattresses you can get on Amazon. Exhibit A: http://www.frugalwoods.com/2014/06/23/how-i-saved-2120-by-buying-a-mattress-online/

Oh yeah! And for research, I highly recommend Mattress Underground:

Hard to navigate sometimes, but good info.

My wife and I are in the market for a new mattress and quite a few friends and colleagues have been raving about their Tempurpedic mattresses, so we went and looked at them a few weeks ago.  While it was comfortable (for the 5-10 minutes we were sprawled out in the mattress store), I could not stomach the price tag so we left and I began to give consideration to the "mattress in a box" options that are out there (Tuft & Needle, Yogabed, Casper, Purple, Leesa, etc.).

At this point, I am planning to give the Tuft & Needle mattress a try--as was noted they all tend to have generous trial periods where you can return it with no questions asked for a full refund so I feel the risk is minimal.  The only reason that I haven't ordered it yet is because we are also shopping for a new headboard / frame.  We are 40 y/o and have never had an actual bed with a headboard, we have always just had our mattress on the metal rails against the wall.

I have not really considered the Costco option however I was just looking at the other day and added that to the mix if we aren't happy with the T&N mattress.

We have a Tempurpedic for the last 5 years.  I like it a lot but it can get hot in the summer.  I bought a Leesa mattress for my parent spare bedroom because I use it sometimes and find it just as comfortable and I'd go that route or similar in the future.

This is the issue that we have with our memory foam mattress.

Its also weird the first time you have sex on it (the oscillations are damped), but we got over it.

We got our Tuft and Needle and put it on a cheap walmart frame which is designed for no box spring. It's nice since it's off the ground a bit and gives us some space underneath.

Consumer Reports reviewed mattresses in March (I think) of this year.  The top rated memory foam mattress was the Novaform 14" Serafina Pearl Gel that costs $799 for a Queen at Costco.  I believe it goes on sale for $599 once a year or so.  CR said it did not retain heat.

There is a different Novaform mattress on sale right nor through 7/31, but that was not reviewed by CR.

Just checked out Tuft and needle's site. The price point sounds really good - $600 for a queen. Returns processed by donating it to a local charity. Was curious - what do you think of it now that you have it?

I like it. It's a bed and does that well.

It's reasonably firm, which may be a benefit or drawback.

I might thrill to a particularly effective turn of phrase, but I'm also very particular about extracting the maximum value out of my purchases and DH and I are naturally frugal folks. Planning to be FIRE'd in 2-3 years - before I'm 40 :) But yes, I am one of those evil marketing folks trying to get you to open your wallet. Just happened to be the field I've always been passionate about! When I'm FIRE'd I'd likely still use my skills in side hustles or helping out a nonprofit/charity here and there.

I did add an exclamation mark :)

Back to mattresses....I'm glad this whole topic was brought as DH has had continuing neck/back pain. I'm hoping we won't have to replace our mattress (only 3-4 yrs old) but am open to it. I didn't know much about the new companies like Caspar and Tuft&Needle and am glad to see them as options now.

+1 to tuft and needle, if you have an american express card you might be able to get a $100 off coupon for mattresses over $500. The great JL Collins even recommends, Tuft and Needle,

We got a Tuft & Needle last year and are very happy with it. The mattress is very comfortable and the whole ordering and delivery experience was just so easy - no haggling, no arranging delivery windows or anything - we ordered it online and then it showed up on the porch, all squished up in a box.

+1 for matresses from Costco.  They frequently put them on sale and they'll haul your old one away.  We bought a Consumer Reports recommended mattress from Costco three years ago and have not regretted it.

BOOM!  This mattress is on sale at Costco from 8/4 - 8/28 for $150 off.  Normally $799 for a queen, on sale for $649, shipping and handling included.

It's $100 cheaper in store...shipping isn't really "free" but factored into the charged online price.  I picked mine up for $499 about 3 months ago.

I am going to guess that you bought a Novaform mattress at Costco.  They have several different mattresses at Costco.  My guess is it isn't this mattress.

Anybody have experience with this type of mattress?

Are there better alternatives?
Unless you like buying a mattress that costs as much as a car, then hell yes, there a TONS of alternatives.
Go to Amazon and search memory foam mattress. Gazillions of options for less than $500. Pick one of those. Tempurpedic is WAY overpriced.

We got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B9JIGOS/ in May 2015.  I like the mattress because it is comfortable and supportive.  I don't like that it insulates so well because I heat up as I sleep and as a 31 year old woman I should not be waking up with hot flashes.  This is unique to this mattress, I'm pretty sure I'm not going through menopause ;-)  My husband, who doesn't heat up when he sleeps, really likes this mattress though he thinks it is a bit too firm for his liking.  I think it is just about the perfect level of firmness.

I bought this mattress a couple weeks ago on sale for $649 from Costco.  So far I am very happy with it.  The only reason I went with it is that Consumer Reports rated it as the best memory foam mattress.

I did my best to allow it to air out for 4 days to allow the out gassing to occur, but nothing bad.

Very happy with the purchase.

Costco novaform...I just purchased one a few months ago.  The Queen was $400 on sale in the store and is a consumers report best buy and has a 20 year warranty.

I am going to agree. I got it because of CR combined with Costco's return policy (not that I want to lug it there...). It took me a week to get used to it, but my husband and I love it!

I couldn't even begin to guess the brand, but we bought the "whatever they had" brand of foam mattress at Sams for $300/King.  It was worth the money just to watch the damn thing sproing to a kingsize bed from a compressed suitcase sized thingamabob.  It's fine.  We got a queen "whatever brand they had" foam mattress from Amazon for our guest bed.  It's fine.

People put waaay too much emphasis on mattresses.  They're marked up a few hundred percent at most stores.

I watched a news story on mattresses where they interviewed a professional mattress tester (yes, that's a real job).  He laughed at all the super expensive options out there and basically said "find something cheap and comfortable and sleep on that."  His bedroom had an air mattress tossed on the floor.

Bought a king sized memory foam bed on Amazon for $300, because my kids kept getting into bed with us and 4 people just don't fit on a queen. The mattress was a bit too firm for my wife, so we asked Amazon how to return it. They refunded us the money and told us to keep it, sell it, or recycle it because it is impossible to recompress for shipping. We got a $80 memory foam topper from Costco and put it on the bed. Worked out well for us!

New king sized bed and topper for $80! However, I wouldn't suggest anyone actively try this approach...

I purchased this Dynasty Cool Breeze memory foam bed on amazon and we LOVE it. The queen size is $429. We're thinking of putting it in the guest room and getting the California king which is only $539. It also came with two memory foam pillows.

I'm so happy I took the risk and purchased a bed online. I was nervous. It came rolled up like a tootsie roll in a box which made it super easy to unpack in my apartment. It's a bit firm- which I like. It has softened over time, but is definitely not for someone who like overly soft beds. I couldn't recommend it more. I did a lot of research on density and layers of tempur-pedics and this was the closest match I could find. Any questions, feel free to ask.

I bought this back in June: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013L4ZWWW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'd give it a 7/10. I like it, it's comfortable enough, but not phenomenal. I also bought this for it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HCZ0YGG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (old mattress was old and worn and old frame was literally falling apart).

I don't know how much Bob-o-pedic (from Bob's Discount Furniture) is going for, but I recently a couch from Bob's with the bobopedic and oh my god is it comfortable. I never tried a Temperpedic before, but I'd recommend checking out Bob's.

(Any pillows anyone can recommend?)

+1 for T&N.  Purchased at the beginning of the year with this frame and love it.
