Making a cellphone ring louder
« on: August 09, 2018, 01:03:40 PM »
I need to start with, our business is on the water.
My wife just upgraded from a flip phone to a smart phone after dropping her flip phone in the water.
She always wore her flip phone on a pant loop and could always here it ring.
She is now paranoid about dropping any phone in the water, let alone her more expensive smart phone.
So it stays in side when she is outside. I just called her 6 times and she didn't answer, (no it's not me)
she just can't hear the phone when it's inside the boat.
Is there a device that will trigger an outside ringer or just ring really loud when her cellphone rings?

She could get a smart watch that would buzz on her wrist to notify her. I have a Samsung Gear Fit that does that. Works great for me as I often don't hear my phone.

Can't drop it if it's securely fastened.

Changing the ringtone might help.  Some of them are very soft, so I changed mine to what the old rotary phones rang like and it's pretty loud.  The newer phones come with many to choose from.  Also. make sure the ringer is set to the loudest it'll go.

In addition to a smart watch, there has to be other devices that attach to a phone using Bluetooth or similar technology that could alert for rings.

You could hack this project to provide whatever notification is desired:

What about a waterproof case? I was looking at this type of thing recently to give my parents for their cruise.

I'm looking at the watch bands, possibility!
The Ditto caught my eye, but at $40...

She has a case but doesn't wear it like the tiny old phoneshe had.
We already picked the loud old style ring.
I like the hack thing, but that will run $50.
We talked about a waterproof case, but then she saw the price.

Speaking of waterproof, I found a phone floating near my boat.
Picked it out rinsed it off, and looked for mom, no mom, so
I made a couple of calls and some started explaining whose phone called them,
it finally clicked, I knew the guy. He had a waterproof flip phone.
And it worked as it should.

I've been experimenting with resonant pvc tubes to make it louder.
I could set up a shelf to slide her phone on with the tube above it.
I get a volume increase, just don't know if it is enough.
For those interested, I found an online spectrum analyzer,
plugged a mic in and the spectrum is below. It alternates between 1000Hz and 2400Hz.

$6.06? That seems pretty reasonable to me, especially if it's a daily thing and the boat is your business. There's a more expensive one that floats.

Anyway, though, it sounds like you've been thinking through lots of good options. And I haven't actually tried the waterproof cases.

I second the ringtone change first since it will cost you $0.  If the ringtones on the phone aren't loud enough, you can download them from Google Play.  Assuming she has an Android.  I like the classic ringtones and some of them can wake up the dead.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
