Loose leaf Green Tea
« on: August 01, 2022, 01:50:06 PM »
Anybody have preferences on brands of organic loose leaf green tea and where to buy it? Preferably on Amazon.
I'm trying to get myself off the soda and already pounded almost 2 quarts today.
Probably better go with decaf as well.

This may be a bit different from what you are looking for, but I've recently started drinking Yaupon Brothers tea. It's made from Yaupon Holly, which is the only native North American plant with caffeine. It tastes very similar to green tea. I especially like the Fire Roasted blend.

I've gotten The Tao of Tea - Gunpowder Green Tea from Amazon.  It's included on the Subscribe and Save.

To expand on this topic, what diffuser do people use?  I like to go loose leaf but all the diffusers I've tried are a bit of a pain and require rinsing out a lot.

I have bought the FGO brand of a few different varieties of looseleaf tea on Amazon and been happy with it. They also have stringless teabags in bulk, which I like because I can compost them easily.

If you want a non-caffeinated alternative to green tea, tulsi is good. For some reason green tea makes me feel awful, so I switched to tulsi.

My family's Chinese and we drink a lot of tea. For single servings, we've always used a cup with strainer similar to this: Teabloom Single-Serve Tea Maker - Double Wall Glass Cup with Infuser Basket and Lid

The large mouth of the strainer makes it really easy to dump the tea leaves and rinse.

I tend to find that decaf versions of drinks that naturally contain caffeine don’t taste as nice as the original. And often they contain surprisingly high amounts of caffeine despite the name and lack of flavour.

Have you tried rooibos?

It isn't from Amazon, but my favorite green tea is from Upton Tea Imports.  I've tried a bunch of their teas, including their green sampler set.  My favorite is Season' Pick Young Hyson.  It is delicious.  I have a wide mouth stainless steel tea strainer from Amazon that is a cinch to clean.

Just try different brands until you figure out what you like. My favorite tea for example is most readily found at Meijer/Walmart, and is considered "cheap". But that's a black tea.

I love green tea and always drink jasmine loose tea from the local Asian market.

That said, we went to a very fancy tea tasting years ago and they said that almost all teas are grown without pesticides whether the label says so or not, because export rules for tea are so strict that most countries err on the side of caution so they can export their tea.

If you are in the US, Mountain Rose Herbs has very extraordinary teas that are certified organic, and a wonderful company. Not sure how pricing compares to Amazon.

It's not a fancy name, but my favorite green teas come from japanesegreenteaonline.com.  Likely pricier than a lot of teas you can find on Amazon, but I drink green tea almost every morning and love their organic sencha and netto gyokuro.

I've ordered herbal teas from Mountain Rose Herbs and really liked them, but have never tried their green tea.  This reminds me to give them a try.

I'm making 2 qts at a time for iced tea. That's why I'm looking for loose leaf.
I have this Takeya pitcher that I bought over 10 years ago. Looks like they've upgraded them and cost a lot more now.

For hot tea, I use tea bags.

I've not tried rooibos, but will give it a shot. Really trying to cut my caffeine intake so that could be a good option.

I recently got this electric kettle with a built-in diffuser. I really like it so far! The diffuser is basically a metal cup with a bunch of tiny holes in it; I find it much easier to clean than the wire mesh diffusers. It has a few built-in temperatures to bring your water up to the perfect temperature to brew the variety of tea you're making, whether it's black tea or green tea or oolong tea or a couple others. Once I brew it I like to use the "keep warm" feature to maintain the tea at a bit lower temperature than I use for brewing. I keep it in my home office. I brew a full pot in the morning and drink it into the afternoon, really handy to have it right there at the perfect temperature when I want a refill.

I prefer black teas so no recommendation about green tea varieties, sorry.

I buy Numi Organic Jasmine Green tea from Amazon. I’ve tried others, but it’s my favorite. Brewing in an electric kettle where you can control the temp seems to help the flavors.

This might not be quite what you're looking for, but it could be worth a try. My wife and I discovered it years ago and recently purchased 16 boxes when it went on sale at our local grocery store ($1.99 per box).

This green tea is so good, we haven't bought any other flavored drink in over 2 years and probably won't ever again as long as this tea exists.

When it goes on sale again, we may end up purchasing a 10-year supply in case it ever gets discontinued.

I'm actually seeing it on Amazon now - 8 boxes for $25 which at $3.13/box is amazing value.

I cannot emphasize how good this green tea is. We hope to drink it for the next 50 years. No, this is not hyperbole.

There's a whole world of herbal teas out there if you don't want caffeine. You don't need to limit yourself to just decaffeinated green tea.

I was drinking black tea, but when I lived in the states I would order David's Organic loose leaf tea from Amazon.  I'm sure they have green and herbal varieties as well.

They do, but a lot of them have sugar/sweetners and artificial flavours in them. David's flavoured teas are kind of considered the sangria of the tea world, as in they're delicious and fun, but not what I'm going to choose when I want a fine herbal tea.

David's Forever Nuts makes a FANTASTIC latte.

Plain honeybush is very cheap, naturally slightly sweet, re-steepable, great hot or iced, & basically can't be over-brewed. Were I seeking decaf, I'd drink it all the time. Rooibos is a relative with a more mineral-woody profile, also doesn't contain caffeine. Peppermint is also cheap & effective even in very small amounts at making water less boring. None have the tannic bitterness that complicates true tea.

Actual tea is delicious, but costly, so when all I want to drink is "pleasant aromatic liquid," which may be what you're really asking for, I don't waste tea-money. Green tea does still contain some caffeine if you're actually trying to avoid that but bulk quantities of gunpowder & sencha are often least costly. Loose leaf saves a lot of money & waste (just throw it in the garden, it's wet leaves.)

Yeah, I'm an avid tea drinker but I have ridiculous taste. :)  I basically have the same taste in tea that I do in icecream -- put as much stuff in there as possible.  I mean, I drink it black, but I love it with bits of fruit, nuts, chocolate, etc. in the mix.  It used to crack me up -- I lived in Taiwan for 5 years and China for a year, and people would see me at work with my ceramic teapot and ask what tea I was drinking and I'd be like "Butterscotch Ripple" or some nonsense. :)

How about a flavored carbonated water? I'm on a Carnivore diet and had only water to drink for 7 weeks. My son had an AHA a Coca-Cola product that is zero everything.
After checking the ingredients, I tried it, it is different, but I got used to it quick. Another one is Bubly a Pepsi product. I'm drinking a Cherry Bubly as I write.

I buy my tea by the pound from this outfit: https://kuanyinteas.com/

They've got a bunch of green teas in their inventory -- maybe you'd spot one that looks good?

We don't do their greens much, but we do like the Nepali Breakfast a lot. As in that's our first pot brewed in a day pretty much all the time. They have green too of course: https://nepalteacollective.com/collections/green

I also like Stash's https://www.stashtea.com/collections/loose-leaf-tea/products/dragon-phoenix-pearl-jasmine-green-tea a lot. And their double berg, double chai, etc. You can get them at least on amazon, some of it, and sometimes, but I usually just order direct. We order enough at a time to hit free shipping anyway. The dragon pearl isn't cheap but is good.
