Long term rentals with RelayRides?
« on: July 28, 2015, 01:14:43 PM »
Has anyone ever entered into a long-term rental agreement on RelayRides? I'm talking LONG term, like three months or more?

My wife and I may find ourselves in a situation where we need to have a car for only a couple months.  This wouldn't happen until later this year.  I looked into zipcar but multiple daily rentals each week would cost thousands per month. No thanks.  Renting from a conventional renter like Enterprise would be comparable.

Provided a long-term rental price would cost about the same as financing a car (~$200 per month, with insurance?) do you think this is a viable possibility??

am I just dreaming here?

I never have, but in principle that sounds fine if the numbers really work out like that. I'd love to hear from someone who has used relayrides at all. Seems reasonable that someone out there wants to ditch their car for a few months, but it's probably a very small market.

I've used Relayrides a couple of times, but not for long-term rentals. I loved it. I only picked cars that had multiple good reviews.

The only downside is that because the car owners are people with other jobs and a life, you have to make sure you are very punctual at pickup and dropoff. This isn't as important when you are renting from a car-rental agency. Other than that, if the price is right, and there are lots of good reviews, I would have no hesitation.

Of course, it goes without saying that you should contact your insurance company to make sure you are covered. I was, so it was a no-brainer.

I've rented my car out on Relayrides before; never rented through them.  If there's a listing out there that has the dates available, why not?  No harm in trying.  There's a search filter for long term rentals in my copy of the app; I'm showing lowest monthly rates at $5-$600 in my area.
