Guys, I need you help!
A friend of mine bought a brand new Subaru WRX 4 years ago for 33K CAD. It's now at the end of its guarantee (4 years / 100k kms - 60K miles) and went at the dealer for his 100K maintenance. The dealer told him he has 4000$ to put on the car (4 new tires (900$), 1 new windshield (600$), 100K km maintenance (800$), brakes (1100$)).
That 4K$ discouraged him enough to consider another brand new WRX 2019. The deal would give him 19K CAD for his 2015 as it is right now (he won't pay the 4K maintenance) and it would cost him, according to him, only 15K CAD more to have the 2019.
I know there are many elements here. First, that 100K kms maintenance is absolute robbery. I'm trying to convince him to only buy new tires, let me do his brakes fro 400$ + a 6-pack, and forget the windshield for now and maintenance (only do fluids flushes). But he doesn't want to hear me.
Then, he says, according to his calculations (I have no idea how he came up with this), it would cost him only 600$/year
more to own the 2019 if he keeps it for 10 years.
My arguments:
- Ok, keeping the car for 10 years is a great idea, why not keep the 2015 for 6 more years?
- You will face the same problem in 4 years with your 100K km's maintenance on the 2019
- You have a opportunity cost on that extra 15K$. In 10 years, it could be worth close to double
- You'll pay 15% (Quebec taxes) in taxes for a second time in 4 years - money directly to the ''garbage''
- You assumed the worst depreciation in the first 4 years and now you want to repeat that?
But all of those are not working!!! Please help me show him how much more it would cost him with
actual numbers!
Thanks
