Leather jackets? (for my wife)
« on: September 08, 2017, 07:10:43 PM »
My wife (the frugal one in our marriage) has wanted a good leather jacket for a long time. I have been buying a lot of stuff for myself since my income went up recently. (We have zero debt and are on track with our finanacial goals!). So, I think it is her turn to get an expensive indulgence she wants. Personally, I could not care less about wearing/owning one myself, and think black ones look pretty kitchy and tacky. Also, we live in the HELL A area where it is basically never cold enough to wear one--at least for me.

Anyway, what brands would you suggest? If this is a "buy-it-for-life" purchase, I'm thinking it might not be too much of a waste of money. I bought her a leather Coach purse (a low-key one that does not scream: "COACH!!!" all over it) nearly ten years ago, and it is nearly as good as new. In that time, she would have probably gone through 8 or 10 cheap throw-away purses.

Suggestions for brands to look for, and where to buy them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Similar to your wife, I had always wanted a nice leather jacket (though I agree with you that black doesn't look so good).  I bought a "Black Rivet" brown leather jacket at Wilson's Leather.  I actually tried them on in the store at the mall, but then purchased it from their website since they didn't have the color/size combo I wanted in stock.

A tip:  never pay the "original" or sticker price.  I'm convinced no one has every spent 700 dollars on the jacket I bought.  I paid $150 for it and it has held up very well for going on 3-4 years now.  It gets lots of compliments too, but I'm in Phoenix, AZ and only get to wear it 3-4 months of the year.  Wilson's Leather seems to have a 70-80% off sale for every season and every occasion.  I imagine you'd have to be one unlucky sucker who HAD to buy a jacket the one day of the year they didn't have a sale.

If you have a Saks Off Fifth or Neiman Marcus Last Call outlet anywhere near you, it might be worth a look.

I got a really nice Jhane Barnes leather jacket for 40% of the original retail price at Saks, which I still have ten years later, and it looks like new. I do treat the leather with Lexol once a year.

Back in 2003 or so, I happened to be at the Neiman Marcus outlet right as they pulled a rack of leather jackets onto the shop floor. I forget the brand now (it was a high end name), but they were reduced from over $2k down to $500 or so. I ended up selling that one after I lost 45lbs :)

I would recommend a Cole Haan jacket if you're looking for nice quality.

Maybe I'm weird, but I would look in thrift or consignment stores.  I've seen tons of leather jackets there, and you can see what has held up over years/decades.  It may take a little searching to get great condition with her size and a style that she likes, but I think it would be doable.
