Job Searching
« on: March 04, 2016, 08:15:33 PM »
Does anyone have experience with a good method or website for job searching? My lady-mustache partner is looking for a job while she is in grad school in NYC. We care about social justice and civic engagement, but also care about making enough money to maintain our plans for the future. Any suggestions besides the mainstream job search sites? Thanks!

Good call--I should've thought of that!

It's great to use the sites to get an idea of what's out there, but nothing compares with networking. I'd try using meetup.com and joining some groups on social justice issues. I know several people who have found jobs that way (and I myself have helped make connections through those groups.) And, of course, linkedin.

EMILY's List sends out a weekly posting of all sorts of social justice jobs. Their list is very diverse including everything from advocacy groups to non-profits to campaigns. The postings cover the entire US, but many of the jobs are in NYC. Your SO can sign up on their website if she's interested. She also may want to check out idealist.org if she hasn't already. They're the Monster of non-profit jobs.

idealist.org would be a great place to find cause jobs. They don't have a lot for those of us not in major metro areas, but I just did a search for Manhattan and there were over 3000 jobs listed with varying skill sets desired.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
