Title: Job change: fulltime with benefits to haltime w/o? Good idea?
Post by: Snapdragon48 on January 16, 2020, 05:10:46 AM
Hi, I have a conundrum for you: should my husband, who currently teaches full time at our local high school, switch to teaching halftime in order to take care of our 4-month old child and join me working at my growing business? The downside: loss of job-related health insurance and then having to shop the marketplace. It could also be a pay cut depending on the profitability of my greenhouse business in a given year.

We're both 31, live in the Midwest, have a paid-for house, and no debt. We have some money saved for retirement, a decent chunk in our hsa, and an emergency fund with a year's worth of expenses saved. So what do you think?

Thanks!

I think you would have to post a full case study to get any useful feedback.

How much do you have for emergency funds?
How much is marketplace insurance going to cost?
How does your business income compare to your expenses? How much could he help expand that?
Is this what he wants, what you want, or an idea you came up with together?
How recession proof is your business? This is especially important since he has one of the most stable jobs available, albeit not entirely recession proof when cities start cutting costs.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just posted in the case study category.
