See, I simply avoided this whole issue by never starting to consume alcohol in the first place. ;)

I'm not going to 'out' people
..OOPS!

Heh.  I was just about to type an extended response to this thread and now it looks like I don't have to.  Thanks, dc.

I'll say this:  If you feel your drinking is under control and you're okay with the $$ spent, it's probably fine as long as you're not going off on a binge.  Consider it an entertainment cost and move on.  Personally, though, my own life is better without it.  People's experiences clearly vary wildly.  I'm not out on some kind of mission to stop folks from drinking -- just relating experiences.

@Oldtoyota -- same here, when I'm exercising hard, urges to do all sorts of bad things -- including overeating and staying up too late -- virtually go away.

Edit: Typo.

I value MMM so much for delivering a convincing argument counter to the cultural norms of our consumerist culture.

But I really despise these "is it Mustachian?" questions. (As does OP I suspect based on his comments. )

It reminds me too much of the religious piety nonsense that followers in the wake of a leader always resort to.

To me the correct question for any purchase is, "is the money spent on this item likely to bring me more happiness than the amount of freedom that the money could otherwise buy. "

This answer will be different for each different person and each different item.

For this guy, a glass of wine with dinner at the end of a long day at the hospital is usually money well spent.

This post is not mustachian.  You are on mustachian probation.  If your probation is not lifted, you will not go to FIREland when you die.  Instead, you will be sent to RatRacePurgatory.  To lift your probation, please complete five sacred cows and ten DIYs.

I AM the OP, mutha fucka! Sorry!! That just feels so damned good!! The term "OP" has a hip hop feel to it, no doubt about it.

And yes, you are correct, I don't like labels, unless they are positive ones...and even then perhaps not so much. "I am" "you are" "you are not" are red flags to me.

I've learned a lot on this thread and again, thank everyone for their great posts. 14 days without the booze so far, and counting!

That's because if you add another P, you then are down with OPP. (Yeah, you know me.)

I now only drink on Friday and Saturday evenings--and about half of what I used to.  4-6 beers.  Beer is insanely expensive where I live in Ontario.  It's still a ridiculous, facepunch-worthy $164/month.  But I used to drink $400-600 worth!!  Just crazy--more than my rent!!  But it's what happens when you go with friends to a pub 3 times a week at $30 a pop.

Check out the attached bit of stupidity.  The only reason it's low at the beginning is because I didn't used to properly track my cash spending.

That is completely insane!

Of note --- People have been saying this will be "rocket fuel" or prison hooch or nasty.   All signs of an underdeveloped mustache in my opinion.    My brew is still not complete and tasted pretty nice last night so far.

Give it a try and flex you MMM muscle a bit.  Maybe even step out of your comfort zone.  In my opinion the taste for beer and wine are acquired tastes.  Just a fancy way of saying the first couple of times you drink them they taste nasty but once your psyche figures out they get you drunk then your reinforcement loop says,  "Hey, these are really pretty good"

If anyone here wants to have a fun time with themselves ---- give up regular beer and drink strictly NA beer for about 4 or 5 months.  (not cheating)  The first drink you have of alcohol beer will shock you.   You will be thinking "who the hell put rubbing alcohol in my beer!?"

Bobby:

1) NA = non alcoholic, correct?
2) Does NA beer typically still have a trace of alcohol?
3) Sorry for calling you Bobby. Consider it an endearing expression, or...tell me to F off.

Thanks.

1 = yes
2 = minute trace
3 = The only people to call me Bobby are my dear departed mom or my much older siblings of which we loath each other.  So you're either the ghost of my mom communicating through the internet or you're one of my siblings?  If your the latter, then F off.   lol
