Is there a way to unsubscribe from threads?
« on: July 12, 2023, 07:49:49 PM »
I often use the "show new replies to your posts" link up at the top right to follow subjects I'm interested in.

But there are a few I am no longer interested in.

Is there a way to "unsubscribe" from them so I don't see the notices?

Thanks!

I remember this coming up before, maybe in the FAQ section.  I think you have to delete your comment from the thread in order to no longer see it when clicking "show new replies to your posts".  If someone knows another way, I'm interested to learn.

Some threads I've commented a dozen times but no longer interested in the thread.

Instead of using  "show new replies to your posts", you can use notifications - see https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/forum-information-faqs/suddenly-emails-for-notification-threads/

If I tire of a thread I've participated in, I (painfully) go through each page, press F3 (for find - may vary depending on your browser, see also Ctrl + F) and type in "retorch" and look for any instances of my participation, and delete them.

This process sucks, so it makes me very hesitant to join threads unless I really feel strongly about a topic, and am willing to commit to it.

I just click the "mark as read" tab every few days to clear the clutter that I don't care about viewing.  That seems to work okay for me.

Wait, you mean you delete your postings? I would prefer you not to do that, it might remove important pieces that add to the continuity of the thread.

Naturally, do whatever you want, but to me this is poor discussion board etiquette. (I am sure there are numerous people who will say it is fine or even good etiquette)

At the risk of repeating myself, NOTIFICATIONS is the way to go, and the thread I pointed to above shows you how to do it.

I also switched to using the Notifications page to avoid this issue, it is easy to unsubscribe if you use that method.

This doesn't fix the utility of the "New Replies" button - it eliminates it! For sure, I use notifications for my "top" threads, but I also participate in other threads, and want to use "New Replies" to... find out about new replies. But then for threads I stop being interested in, there's no good way to stop seeing them.

I read through the linked thread, but I don’t think you’re answering the question being asked.

I pointed to the approved alternative.

Some years ago, the forum was excessively slow. This was caused, in part, by people using “show new replies to your post”. There was a very long thread about it, and the use of notifications instead was suggested. A number of people changed to notifications and the forum became somewhat faster. The moderators also deleted a number of userids that had never posted and were old. This was the second fix for the problem.

As people have already mentioned in this thread it’s a problem when people delete their posts because it can significantly reduce the readability and use of a thread.

In general if I'm leaving a thread, it devolved badly into polarized discussions and will go nowhere anyway...

When any content I contributed is worthwhile, it tends to be part of a reply-quote, and those don't go anywhere even if my original comment goes away.

Also, those threads are often overwhelmingly long, and I doubt the minutia of individual comments matter for someone trying to learn something.

You can check the box "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic" which basically turns the Notifications page into the same as the New Replies page (going forward). Just with the added benefit of being able to quickly unsubscribe with the unnotify button. The only downside is that it won't have all the threads you've previously commented on. I've been using the notifications method for years, so that's really not an issue for me anymore, but I used to periodically check the New Replies page to supplement to Notifications page.

Thanks I'll do this -- switch to notifcations that is.   Yeah I have been using "Mark all as unread" for those I have not been interested in.

And this is where you can enable automatically notifying for any thread you post in.
