I bought a giant ham and I don't know what to do with it
« on: December 31, 2015, 03:32:15 PM »
Hello wise Mustachians,

Maybe this should go in off-topic, but I bought a giant 9.5 lb ham because it was a frugal way to get lots of meat so on that basis I'm putting it here!

So I bought a ham. I don't know what to do with it. The label says "Ham Half (bone-in) Skin On."

I asked the Internet and it told me ham comes either cured or uncured (gammon)? How do I know if my ham is cured? Do I even need to know that, in order to cook it? It has skin on, does that mean I can make crackling? How do I know how long to cook it for, and how do I make crackling, and just generally, please help me cook my ham?

We invited friends round for a big new year's day lunch tomorrow and wanted to serve a delectable ham, but I will need your help! Any advice greatly appreciated. Don't assume I know anything!

crock pot ftw!

No idea for your particular ham, but we put uncooked ones  in for 8 hours or so and they are delicious.

Roast it with a dijon mustard and brown sugar glaze.

If you will need all of this for your guests, cook the entire thing. Otherwise, cut off a couple of ham steaks first. After your meal, save the ham bone and use it for ham and bean soup.

Chop it up in cubes and fill 1 quart freezer zip lock bags.  Freeze them for use later in beans.  Makes for delicious white beans and red beans.
