How to stay engaged (for years) when work is a means to an end?

Also just want to say, thanks for starting this thread! I'm feeling the same way,  I have a dream job and yet I still dread going in every day,  but we're starting a family in December and now's not the time to make any major career moves (I just started my job in April as well). Going to try some of these tips myself.
