How to make extra money on the road..
« on: January 28, 2015, 09:24:09 AM »
So I'm traveling basically 100% for work and I currently hold down an eBay business that brings in about $500 a month.  I do all the work in my limited weekend time.

Since I am constantly in hotels, Im trying to think of a way I could make extra money while on the road.  Like perhaps reviewing hotels? I dont know of anywhere that pays for reviews.

Book hotels based on hotel rewards. A lot of the hotels I go to give app. 5% back in rewards cards. I get a few hundred dollars a year in points, which I redeem for cash.

I also use the time in hotels to study. Its quiet time away from friends and family.

I'm banking tons of points with marriott.  Not sure if I can redeem cash, but I would be I would bet taking a bath compared to what types of free nights I could get

One side hustle that I have that I just do when I have a bit of free time on my hands is write for Textbroker. You get paid per word, and write articles on a variety of different things. Could be worth looking in to-it's something mindless for me to do when I have a bit of down time to make $3-5 on. Can add up if you write a few-have had cashouts of $40 or so dollars in the past from writing a handful of articles.

I have heard that some people make a lot of money in hotels.  How open are you willing to go?

Was it pretty easy to get approved to write?

Yes, they approved me pretty quickly. It was a couple years ago, so can't remember exactly how long I waited, but it was not too long.

I'm not a frequent traveler, but the things that occur to me:

If Marriot is your hotel of choice then ensure that you are very familiar with their rewards program.  Are there other perks you can use or ways that points can be use?  Investigate other similar hotel chains' programs.  Can you get better rewards by changing?

Are you required to use a company cc?  If not, churn cc's for fun and profit.

Do you have free time available while you are traveling.  As in, work a normal 8 hour day and the rest is yours.  If so, maybe scope out local thrift/secondhand/goodwill type stores (many are open into the evening hours) and become an expert on something(s) that you can pick up 'cheap' and resell at a reasonable profit.

The writing gig seems like a good idea and you can concentrate on travel type articles and also do articles on what to do/see when visiting so and so area.  I love finding articles (usually from local sources) about the hidden gems in an area.

Another idea is online tutoring...not sure if there are paid gigs for this but worth checking into.
