For us - necessary home improvements are one thing. Redecorating, repainting, replacing a functional but worn out and peeling front door, and buying art for the walls is all fluff to us so I classify it that way. We even sold a perfectly functional, solid and comfortable sofa with a couple of small stains in a color I dislike to buy a muvh more expensive new sofa. That's most definitely fluff. That's why I think of it rather like your husband's golf simulator.

I don't need or value a magazine-worthy living room but have decided that yes, I do value a prettier home and want to spend the money towards it. DH would prefer to spend the money renting pretty vacation homes but has compromised.
