I'm applying to be a technical writer after a decade of self-employment. I meet the minimum qualifications for the job, but have little experience in the field. I've got my resume together and uploaded it to the company's website, but they have requested I write a message to the hiring manger to "Let the company know about your interest in working there."

What do I put here? It's not like I have a great drive to do tech writing. It's a paycheck and a means to an end. The internet suggests you write pithy messages about how you always loved the company or were always humming their TV jingles or whatever, but none of this is applicable.

I find the company's finance-related services interesting in an abstract way for its role in greasing the wheels of commerce, but that doesn't make for compelling copy. What do I put here that's not a lie?

That's a dumb request. I would not want to move forward, because every word in the letter would be a lie, no matter what the company does or sells, but that's just me.

Strongly recommend going to AskAManager.org and searching for her advice on cover letters. She also have some examples of good/great cover letters with the warning that you can't just copy them, you need to make it your own.

Good luck

Great suggestions! I found an example I could modify to fit my situation. Thanks!

Agreed, this basically sounds like a cover letter.
