How do I get a will for cheap?
« on: December 06, 2014, 10:45:24 AM »
I found out that my money transfers to my parents if I die.  I only want it going to my father and not my mother.  I am assuming it should be easy to write up something like that having all assets going to my father with him getting discretion about allocating it to the rest of the family as he sees fit.

I did one on Legal Zoom for about $20. They have state specific wills. Probably best to name an alternate beneficiary, in case you were both in a car accident together.

Also see nolo.com.

If you just name your father as beneficiary & he dies, then his will controls what happens to your estate unless you also name one or more secondary beneficiaries and/or a trustee.

You can name a beneficiary by account but this is too easy to forget about as the years go by. It's safer to designate your estate as the beneficiary for your accounts, & then put your wishes in your will.

You can add me as your alternate beneficiary. Send me a PM and I will give you my social security number. I will make sure your mum will not get your stash.

If its a SIMPLE will I would use legal zoom.  I used legal zoom to draw up a lease on my rental houses out in VA before I sold them.  MUCH cheaper than a lawyer who wanted to charge $400 to draw up a lease agreement for EACH house!!
