How do I find an accountant?
« on: November 04, 2014, 08:41:26 AM »
I've been doing our taxes for years on Turbotax, but things seem to be getting more and more complex and I am at the point where I'd like to hire an accountant.  Any suggestions on where to find one?  I've asked a couple of people at work, who don't particularly like the person they use, also tried yelp but the couple I found with several good reviews seem to have artificial sounding reviews.  Just wondering if anyone has tips on what to look for in an accountant!  Thanks!

Hi yoga mama,
Ask wealthier people. Also, lawyers, estate, and financial planners know good CPA's. If you live in a city, you could call your City Treasurer. In my town, it's an elected/volunteer position, but he's been in the job 18 years, is a retired CPA, and knows everyone. If I needed a new CPA, I'd call him first.

I'm an accountant (not tax though). I think you can figure it out yourself. Unless you have a business. Try craigslist, o-desk. You should look for people with experience with your particular issue. tax accounting is vast.

Are you sure you need an accountant and not a tax preparer?  What about a book keeper instead of an accountant?  Although all are similar, the price difference can be huge.

Also, my taxes are getting more and more complex, and turbo tax/ tax act no longer cut it.  So, I decided to take the HR Block tax class.  It is their primary recruitment tool, but I have to say it is an amazing class.  I have learned so much about completing taxes.  I have no doubt that I will be able to complete mine accurately, without worry.  If you do decide to take it, make sure you search for a coupon code.

Back to your original question, have you tried asking people in a trade group or local small business group?  Does Angie's List have accountants?

You're right - I don't necessarily need an accountant, and I think a tax preparer would be fine.  I truly enjoy doing them myself, to be honest.  I'm just afraid that as we start a small business, refinance our mortgage, shift retirement contributions around, I'll mess something up.  I love the idea of taking the tax preparation class - thank you!  I will look into that.
