New job or stay put? Looking for advice ASAP
« on: May 01, 2020, 07:29:24 AM »
Hello all,

I work at a small law firm (attorney) and when the stay-at-home orders were issued at the end of March (for the state I am in), I wasn't sure if I would still have a job (there were rumors of layoffs). So, I applied for a temporary government job so that my income was less likely to be disrupted and although the government job pays $25k less than my current job, at least I would have some income should I be laid off. Well, the government job took a few weeks to get back to me, but now they would like me to continue the hiring process; in the meantime, business at my current job has not slowed down (surprisingly) although we all know things can change at any time with the economy or possible fall out.

Background: I would love to work for the government again (I did once before) and I know the jobs are hard to come by. It would be A LOT less stress than my current job- but it's temporary and they don't know if it would be a 3 month assignment or a 7-8 month assignment. I don't know if I am crazy to even consider this? As far as my current practice area, it is HIGH STRESS and I've been looking to change for quite some time. My current job allows us to work remote right now (we kind of have to however), which I LOVE; the government job may or may not be remote (though I heard it was remote). I have children, so I have to be remote now (schools are out until next August; so far, summer camps are cancelled also).

Since I have been looking for a change...am I missing an opportunity? I am also having a hard time with the less money situation- we really can't take a $2k or so hit to monthly income right now.

Any thoughts? Negotiating points? Ask government job if I could just work a few hours/week to keep my feet in the door? I have not had to even look for a new job in so many years, I am completely rusty when it comes to the job hunt.

Thank you

Sounds like you can't make the full move financially so I would probably, to your point, ask if they are willing to let you work part time. If they said yes you can make some extra $$ while satisfying your interest in working for the government until maybe a better, full-time, better paying opportunity arises.

If they say no or regardless, sounds like it might be time to put out some other feelers for a new job

Is it gov't job a federal job?

25K may seem like a lot, but if it is federal, the benefits (TSP, TSP match, FERS, generous annual and sick leave, job stability) will make up a lot of the difference.

@Rdy2Fire that's what I am thinking when I look at the money...

@erutio yes, it's a government job but no benefits until 90 days and then health insurance only (that would save me 500/month but I'm still in the red overall)

A factor for sure.. pension, insurance, etc but given OP said wasn't sure how long it would last I made the, possibly wrong, assumption that these were non-factors

If I decline the offer, does anyone have any suggestions for verbage/language/explanation to provide the government HR contact? I don't want to have a black mark in case I do apply again....

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
