Help--how to store a mattress?
« on: July 19, 2020, 06:54:14 PM »

In an attempt to save money (free housing + childcare) during COVID, my family has moved in with my parents-in-law. We’re storing all of our furniture in their large garage, probably for the next 5-8 months (???) until we need to move out when we're required to go back into the office for work.

We’ve been able to store all our linens, papers, clothes, books, etc. in the house, but are using the garage for all our furniture, sofas, and queen size mattress.

I’m thinking the furniture (mostly all Ikea) will be fine for the next few months in the garage, but I’m a bit worried about the sofas and our mattress. We have them wrapped in plastic bags and sealed with duct tape, but I’m kind of sketched out by the idea of bugs and moisture getting in, and particularly concerned about the possibility for car fumes to seep into the fabric.

There’s absolutely no room for the sofas inside the house, but there are some possibilities for storing the mattress inside. If you were in this situation, what would you do?

A) Store the mattress inside the house in a corner of the living room (it would be stored on its side/not laying flat, which supposedly isn’t great for the springs, but at least it would be nice and clean indoors).

B) Stack the mattress on top of the mattress we’re currently using and try to sleep on it that way (this has the benefit of the mattress being stored indoors and flat, but I’m not sure this would work well for us sleeping on it).

C) Keep the mattress laying flat in the garage wrapped in the plastic and just not worry about potential bugs, moisture, car fumes.

D) Keep the mattress laying flat in the garage wrapped in plastic but ask parents-in-law not to park their car inside to avoid possible exposure to car fumes.

E) Sell the mattress (too much of a headache to store it) and get a new one when we move out.

F) Other ideas or tips to share that could help us out?

I would try B first and if that doesn’t work, then E.  I wouldn’t keep it stored in plastic for that length of time as you’re risking mold and mildew, which means you’ll then have to pay to get rid of it.

My parents had a surplus of mattresses for a while (idk...) & had me do option B. It was awful, way too soft. I think A is the best idea but if your in-laws aren’t keen on it I’d probably take my chances in the garage. The cost of a new ikea mattress must be far less than what you’re saving by staying with them.
