Help! Microsoft Office ate my homework
« on: July 24, 2014, 12:23:29 PM »
I'm about to cry.  One of the final exams for my Masters degree is due Friday night and I spent all day working on it.  I emailed it to myself last night using Hotmail and opened it at my desk to finish it.  I've been hitting save all day long, and when I finished I exited the program.  It didn't ask me about saving it again so I thought I was okay.  Now I can't find it anywhere.  I realize it was a mistake not to ensure I saved a local copy on the desktop, but I searched through temp folders and recovery folders and there's no evidence I ever worked on the file. Has anyone ever run into this. Does Hotmail have some kind of temp folder where my work might be hiding?

First, I am SO SORRY you are dealing with this.

So you've tried searching the whole computer for that file name? And nothing? And do I understand correctly that at the least, you have the version you emailed to yourself?

If I were in your shoes, I would phone the geek squad at a big tech store, like Future Shop or whatever. Anyways, I'm not very tech savvy, so I'll just send you lots of luck!!!

Were you working on the web browser version of Excel? Go to http://www.onedrive.com and see if it's in your Recent Docs.

Did you *possibly* save it back to the original attachment in hotmail? That can happen in Outlook, so maybe hotmail. Check the mod date on the file you emailed to yourself last night.

If that doesn't work:
Windows 7 search is pretty good. Type a unique word that's in your assignment into the search box and see what pops up, sorting by modification date.

I was working on a locally installed Office 2010.  I emailed the file to myself as an attachment in Hotmail so I have half the work preserved. I've never used Onedrive so there's nothing there. I was hitting save all day long, but I don't recall if it ever asked me where to save it.

Have you tried looking under the "Recent Documents" sub-menu?

If you go to Hotmail now and try to open or download that file... does it ask you to pick a location? Or once it's open, click Save As... see where it takes you by default.

I found it (with some help from one of my coworkers after I called and woke him up).  It was hiding in the Temporary Internet Files folder. The trick he showed me was to open the file again from Hotmail, and when I got to Word go to File>Info, and at the top of the screen was the default address for where the file was located.  I copied that and found the file with what looks like my most recent update.  Thank you everyone for your responses.  After I email this to my professor I have one more exam next month and I'll have my Masters.

Phew. That's a scary moment.  Glad you were able to recover it.  Good luck on finishing up your Masters.  :)
