Title: Help! I want to get rid of my Canadian landline..
Post by: yasirkhan on April 14, 2018, 12:13:57 PM
Hello guys,

First of all, I have been reading this blog for over a year - this blog has totally changed my life for the better so thank you Mr. Money Mustache!

I would like some help please.

I am paying around $37 per month for a landline/home phone from Rogers (which is a service provider in Ontario, Canada).

I am very sure there are other solutions out there which won't cost me a lot but I don't seem to find them.

Would it be possible to use another service for my home phone AND pay less per month without changing our telephone number?

I'd really appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Yasir

Without doing the research for you - check out RedFlagDeals forums. Assuming you have internet, I think you can get good VOIP.

Do you use/need the phone number - don't you have a cell? There is currently a thing for Public Mobile where you pay $8 a month for 50 minutes and 50 texts - you should be able to port your number there no problem.

PTF.  Killed cable, need high-speed internet still for DH's work, and want to kill the landline.

(I've heard of Acanac, but can't remember if it was in a good or bad way.)

Intrigue just did this. Bat signaled!

@Intrigue

Koodo also has a 5$/month plan, but you should be able to find something better.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I do have a cell but my parents are a little old school - they are comfortable with a land line since that is the number they always give out to vendors/service providers etc. Yes, they have cell phones as well but they want the landline.

I'll check out Red Flag Deals.

I just want to replace the expensive landline plan to something which keeps the landline active with the same number but for a lower cost.

You could probably reduce your total phone+internet cost by going a la carte...

-switch to Fido Internet 5 $35 for 50 GB /mo or Fido Internet 30 $50 for unlimited GB /mo

-buy an Obi200

-port your number to VoIP.ms

Not 100% sure on my information, but I think Bell offers VOIP landline. You can keep your old phone number. And if Bell offers this, Rogers may offer something similar. I would call Rogers and explain the situation (wanting to go to VOIP), and ask if they have a bundle, if you get your internet from them as well. My mom did something similar; I want to say her landline is $5/month, but she also uses Bell's internet.

I made this switch quite a few months back.  We opted to use the Virgin (Mobile) home phone.  $5/mo for the first year, and $20/mo thereafter (I think we paid $40 for the hub, and had the connection fee waived as we've been Virgin customers for a long time.  If it's available in your area I would check it out.  Has worked great for us!

Another vote for VOIP.

I switched to VOIP Much last August - it's been working good for me

Painless transition and kept my existing #.

Thank you jj2 and everyone else!

I am currently talking to VOIP much.

I really appreciate it.

If you guys know of any other voip services that I can check (for Ontario), please let me know.

I just need a basic landline and I want to pay the lowest I possibly can :)
