Non DIY rooftop solar
« on: December 31, 2022, 05:59:33 AM »
I'm considering rooftop solar.

My hang-up is that I don't have the balls to work on my three story roof so I'd be reliant on contractors for the install and anything that goes wrong in the future. It bothers me to make holes in a leakless roof as well as not being able to service the panels myself.

I'd love to hear about other's experiences and whether their solar system has had any problems.

I hired a crew to put panels on a new construction house and had my old school roofer supervise the install of the mounting system that actually attaches to the roof deck.
He was convinced that it would not leak, so that made me feel better about it.
The worst time to work on a composition roof is in the heat of the summer as just walking the roof can damage it, so think about that. In that situation, early in the day only.

My house was built in 2010 and every house in the neighborhood came with a small solar system. Typically 2.3kW.

The builders used the cheapest materials they could find and the fastest/cheapest labor crews they could find. Many shortcuts were made.

They didn’t use hail resistant shingles, and we are in a heavy hail zone. I have the only house on the block that still has the original roof. Every other roof has failed.

Yet zero of those roof failures had to do with the solar mounts. Even with the cheapest products and laziest labor, the roof connection points have had zero issues.

You’ll be fine on the roof mount.

panels- not on the roof, but on the yard
