Trying to start a website - worth continuing?
« on: September 12, 2018, 07:52:19 AM »
Hi
I'm a speech therapist.  I started a website www.speech-therapyathome.com to try to give parents ideas on how to help their kids at home - and also to try to sell some of my home therapy programs.  I am clearly not a web designer but I tried my best to come up with something.  So far it hasn't had much success.  I tried using google ads to get some traffic just to see what would happen.  For $150 the ad was shown almost 20000 times resulting in 378 people looking at my site.  Of those 5 purchased my products - I cut my price to .99 just to see if people would buy and hopefully leave feed back.  I tried a different ad before at a higher price and didn't get any purchases.  My site ranks very low in search results - its new and I don't know what I'm doing.  It would be nice if people to find it in searches then I wouldn't have to pay for trafic  - but that seems like a long unclear road.

So am I wasting my time and money pursuing something like this?  Is there any point in hiring someone to make it look more professional or to improve my search results?

Thanks for your time and thoughts - I'm very interested in the view point of some mustachios.

I mean it looks like you already did a lot of the work, so it would be strange to abandon it all now.

I think a good idea would be to identify a pain point parents are searching for when they are coming to your page and put that front and center. Something actionable like "you've just discovered your child has speech issue X" here are your next steps. Then you link to step one and you tell them about it oh and by the way here's a tool I've developed it's only $X and I guarantee it will help your child's speech. I think you have all this information there, just need to organize it in a more marketable way.

Sounds like you've put in a lot of work, but as you said, you "dont know what you're doing." So your work hasn't been as effective as it could be, or produced the results you want. Nothing wrong with that! The catch is, you have to learn what to do, though.

Hiring someone could potentially help, but it would also keep you from learning it yourself and it would cost a lot. Results won't be guaranteed, either, bc you'll have hired someone to do a task that may or may not be the task that needs doing. How do you know what your site really needs if you aren't sure what you're doing?

It sounds like you've got a strong purpose for your website (a need that you are filling) and a product to sell. What you need now is Website/Blog know-how. And there are lots of people willing teach you how--a little for free, and more for a price.

To know where to even start, I would recommend googling Jon Morrow and Ruth Soukup, then reading their free info on blogging, product production, and sales. They're pretty different so if one doesn't appeal, the other might. Their info might help you better decide what's worth you time, what you want to bother with, and where to start if you decide to continue.

Good luck! My personal opinion is, dont give up! You've come so far and your programs sound so helpful.
