Generator servicing question
« on: March 01, 2019, 07:07:18 PM »
I just acquired a 7 year old 4 stroke 2000 watt Yamaha generator. The first three years it was well maintained.  The last four it’s been sitting in a garage untouched.

I was worried about bad gas but when I pick it up and shake it, it sounds empty.

My question is what should I do. Here are my options.

1. Just try to start it and if it runs well all good (not sure if this could damage it if there are dried out seals or gas that I can’t tell is in there).
2.  A buddy said try to run some sea foam in it?
3.  I called a place and they said they can do a full tune up for 100 and it might be 150-200 if they need new hoses.
4. Other suggestions?

These things are about 1000-1200 brand new.

Any advice. My main goal is not to cause any damage, second goal is to not spend money.

Change the oil before you do anything else!

Agree about changing the oil.  The most likely bad situation is some varnish in the carb from evaporating gas.
