Title: Freedompop HotSpots - New 4G one? Device limits per account? Friends?
Post by: catccc on December 07, 2016, 02:43:50 PM
I have a freedompop hotspot, it's a Sierra Wireless Overdrive Pro.  I got it in 2013 and it has served me pretty well.  4G coverage was spotty, so I paid the $3.99/month off and on (mostly off) for 3G coverage depending on my travel plans.  At some point in the last few years, the device stopped being able to use 4G, so now it only works with 3G; i.e. only when I'm paying the $3.99/month.  I am thinking 4G coverage has gotten better since then, and I'd like to buy another freedompop hotspot device that supports 4G to try to get away with completely free service.

I'm wondering if anyone has a freedompop account with more than one device, and if they get the 500 free MB with each device, or if it is just 500 free per account.  I suppose I could have DH sign up for one if it is limited to 500 MB per account.

Any recommendation on devices?  I'm considering:
Netgear Mingle, $20, same CDMA coverage as my current device, but also 4G friendly.
Sierra Wireless 803S, $20, ditto on coverage and 4G capabilities as the Mingle.
Novatel Wireless MiFi 2, $30, but it's GSM coverage, so less spotty, but only 200 MB free.

Lastly, anyone want to be freedompop friends with me?  I almost never get near the 500 MB, but I use it quite infrequently for fear of going over.

Generally you can't have more than one hotspot on a FreedomPop account. However that doesn't stop you from using a second email address to set up a new account for the new device. When you do, you get a new data limit for that new account and you can even have the two accounts be friends with each other for bonus data.

PM me the email address on your account. I'll give you three friendships.

Add me! I just got mine; need to activate.

freedompop-phone@jcbeck.com

Accidentally did it on an account where I have my 10 friends already; curious how this will all pan out :-P But I think you can add me and get the bonus. If not, there's a thread on SlickDeals where people post and quickly fill their 10.

Also, I paid $20 for the Netgear Mingle Mobile Hotspot LTE but they are shipping me a Novatel MiFi 500 LTE (Sprint) - supposed to be better though with middling reviews on Amazon. Just want to adjust my account to 100% free and toss it in my truck and get free internet for Pandora listening.

Also - I have 2 hotspots on one account. Somehow. I think they've changed their earlier account limitations. I have one inactive one that I was going to give to my dad but never got around to it. He's good with what he has now.

Any idea why you are getting a better one?  Wondering if I order the netgear I might end up with the Novatel...

Any thoughts on the mingle v. the sierra wireless 803S, anyone?

They sent an email saying "A Gift for your Patience"
Basically - they were out of stock of the original item at the time. It's entirely possible the same thing could happen to you... but no guarantee. Also, they generally want you to use LTE rather than 3G (they give you 500MB free LTE but it costs $4/month to get 500MB of 3G!) so maybe they just prefer that.
