Folding E-bike recommendations
« on: June 19, 2025, 12:57:51 PM »
Does any one have any experience with the type of lighter weight electric bike that folds?

I would like to get back into cycling more. I am pretty lazy and hop in the car when I think about the ride home up the steep hill. Last week, the family was away and I longed for a bike to get me home from the train station.

Some factors:
A drawback of my DH's e-bike is the weight. 59lbs. And it is too big for me. (I am 5'-4") It is hard to haul inside our car.
We drive EV's so it isn't practical to use the bike rack for road trips. But it would be great to have bikes to use while the car charges at a slower or out of the way location.
Our public transit system isn't very accessible - lots of stairs.
I am very nervous about parking a bike all day with the amount of bike theft around the station.

I think I would use it to get to and from the train station, both at home and in the city once a week. Need to bring on a train.
Possibly twice a week for an errand or appointment if I could be assured secure parking.
Every day during a two week road trip (if travel mates also had a bike) so that once at a destination, the car could be parked. Need to fit 2 inside the cabin.

Brompton Electric C Line Explore seems to meet my expectations, but there are no retailers near me to even test one out.

I'd appreciate any insights. Thanks in advance.

Location: Southwestern Ontario, Canada - hilly region.

That looks like a lot of fun. Interesting that they said there were public charging stations… do they just mean power outlets? Many positives, but the price is pretty steep. In my area, a big drawback with an expensive bike of any sort is the risk of theft.

That said, if I had the dough I wouldn’t hesitate to buy that! I highly recommend e-bikes, and agree that the heavy and bulky ones are to be avoided. Folding is cool but you are going to pay for that in less power.

You could also get a folding e-scooter for probably a whole lot less. They are fun too.

Segway makes one for under $1k. And here’s an off-brand folding scooter with a seat!

@Fru-Gal  thanks for the E-scooter recommendation. I hadn't thought about that option at all.

I wish there was an option to rent a couple of bikes or scooters just for our two-week road trip. We are planning to do more driving vacations around Canada in our EV. It would be really nice to be able to park the car for a charging session and toodle around by bike while we wait. The chargers tend to be near highways not the pretty parts of town.
