Fly or Drive for relocation
« on: October 18, 2018, 11:42:15 AM »
Hello!

I'm relocating to another state, and my company offered me to either ship my car & buy me a plane ticket + up to 2 weeks car rental, or reimbursing 54.5 cents per mile.

$0.545 * 759 miles = $413.66!

759 / 30MPG * $3 per gall = $75.90 in gas expense

$337.76 - depreciation & wear and tear of my car.... It'll take 10 hours to drive...

I currently drive a 2013 Hyundai Elantra.

Pulling a random number of $.11 per mile in wear & tear/depreciation; I'd still be making $25.43 per hour

Drive or Fly?

Also remember that moving expenses are no longer tax deductible (unless you're military), so any reimbursement will be taxed. Some employers will "gross up" the reimbursement to cover the taxes.

A 10 hour drive vs a 1.5 hr flight (plus show up 2 hrs early to check backs and deal with TSA, plus another hour on the back end to get bags again and get rental car = 4.5 hrs, plus coordinating the arrival of your car which could fall on a busy work day)

I would drive.

I would drive for the convenience: not having to deal with car rental and getting to the airport, more flexibility on when you leave, and being able to take more stuff with you in the event you need to be without the rest of your belongings for a little while (since you don't mention your  belongings, I'm assuming you're hiring movers as well).

But I don't really mind long car trips (so long as I don't have to take any small children with me lol) - if you do then flying might be worth it.

Have done 2 employer paid x-country moves. We always drive at least one car so we can carry all the crap the movers refuse to take, or that we don't trust them with. This includes anything flammable, important papers, heirlooms, pets, etc.

Since we had small kids at the time of both moves, I flew with them and DH drove one car stuffed to the gills with the above mentioned stuff.

Drive.  I have heard nothing but horror stories about the companies that ship vehicles.  Do you want to be held hostage without your car for two weeks?  It happens often.  And expect broken windows and other damage.

We relocated over 700 miles and drove both cars.  I'd make the same choice.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
