citybankonline.com has 1.03% up to $150,000 if you're willing to make purchases with a debit card and follow a couple of other simple rules.

A number of credit unions have checking accounts with a similar feature.  One of the places to research these is depositaccounts.com.  For California, the link is

http://www.depositaccounts.com/checking/reward-checking-accounts.html#P|26|10000|false,false,true,true,true,true,true|CA|Apy desc

Most of them have an upper limit and a minimum debit card usage.  Also a direct deposit or ACH transaction is typically required.  I keep money in Provident Credit Union, which currently pays 1.76 percent up to $25,000.  I have a small pension check directly deposited and use that money for day to day expenses.  Joining this credit union requires belonging to a participating organization or getting a referral from a current member.  The Provident account, Super Reward Checking, is described here.

Your state may have a credit union with a similar rewards program.

I'm getting 2.05% on up to $35,000 in checking with mine, and 7.5% on savings (only the first $750 though!).

I am earning 1.5% on the first 25k in my checking account at Umpqua Bank. I must have online statements, 1 ach/month, direct deposit, and 15 POS transactions per month.

I make 15 $1 payments to a bill each month to meet the 15 POS requirements each month.

Umpqua Bank is primarily in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. It has locations all the way down to Bakersfield though, just not as common.

Yep, Baylor, I'm on the Everbank train. Fine for now. Seven years ago, I was getting 5% for online accounts.

Haven't done this, but I was an Everbank customer for years for their FX accounts, and always found their customer service to be top notch.

How does the online bill pay count as a pos Txn?  I thought you had to basically purchase something online / swipe the card 15 times.

I'm looking at doin this across 5 or so accounts. I have one right now
Paying 1.03% up to $150,000 but can do much better.

You can make 15 payments with your debit card through your bills website. I do this with Comcast and each payment has to be one cent larger.

Most companies limit the number of payments per day and do not allow you to pay the same amount twice though so it could be a bit of a hassle.
