Title: Ecobee/Nest smart devices and moving
Post by: jeromedawg on June 29, 2020, 03:01:03 PM
For those of you with smart devices and have had to deal with moving out of a place you own (with the intent to rent it out), do you typically bring those devices with you or at least uninstall them? Or do you just sell or rent the place with those things and just de-register them? I'm signed up on Ohmconnect with our Ecobee, so wondering what I would do, realistically. We would be moving into a rental unit so it's not like I could install it there... even if I was permitted to I probably wouldn't want to mess with it anyway. However, eventually we will want to buy a home and I'd probably re-install it there if I still have it. I have the old thermostat that I swapped originally for the current place so I could just put it back up. Wondering if I should do that for if converting this to a rental.
I guess I have the same question for the smart lights I installed in several fixtures. I'm inclined just to take everything with me.

When I bought our Nest I saved the old thermostat in a box and swapped it back out when we moved. The new owners can upgrade if they wish. If I had no use for it at my next home I probably would have left it.

I had an ecobee in our old place that we left there when we converted it to a rental.  I unlinked my ecobee account from the unit and reset it to factory default.  I told my tenant they're welcome to register it and get the app but they haven't.

When we moved to our next place I installed a Nest thermostat.
