Double frugal events...
« on: May 05, 2016, 07:39:19 AM »
So, I have events that are frugal on both ends.

I save my pee and put it on my herb garden.  I tried this as an experiment with two pots, and the diluted pee makes the herbs grow so fast.

So, I save on the flush, and then save on fertilizer.

Hope you will share your double frugal way.

My mustache is not mature enough to save my own urine yet. My hat's off to you though!

I'm interested to see what other suggestions follow.

I poop at work.  Get paid to poop, save money on toilet paper!  Win/win.

One of our cars has no air conditioner.  Saves gas, cost less to buy/maintain, improves badassity.  Win/win/win.

Both of our cars are old and "crappy."  Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain because I don't care how they look!  Win/win.

I roll my own raw dog food.  Healthy happy dogs so fewer vet bills, and their poop no longer needs scooping in the back yard because it disintegrates quickly, so no bags of poop in the trash.  Win/win.

I save grocery/produce bags for picking up dog poop when traveling or otherwise necessary.  Less space taken up in our trash/recycling, and no buying of poop bags.  Win/win.

Our computers are built as "from-scratch" as possible.  Saves money on the front-end, and on the back-end, as future upgradability/refactoring is possible to extend useful life.  Win/win.

I work out at home.  Saves me from having to pay for a gym membership, and saves a bit on the heating bill in the winter.  Win/win.

I cook healthy food at home.  Saves money short-term vs eating out, and saves on future medical bills.  Win/win.

I wear shoes until they're well past the beat-to-hell stage.  Slows down shoe depreciation and is more comfortable because new shoes suck.  Win/win.

I like feedback loops.  Not good to have them working against you.

Not sure this qualifies; modern shoes protect your joints/body from the impact of modern surfaces like solid concrete. Yes, people used to walk around barefoot, but (a) they walked on dirt, grass, and sand as well as rocks, etc; a variety of surfaces most of which were more compliant than concrete, tile, etc that we encounter most today, and (b) barefoot is not the same as a beat up shoe; the shoe restricts your foot's motion so it can't adapt to absorb the impact of walking/running the same way as a bare foot.

Who knows, maybe you're right. But let us know in 30 years how your joints and spine are doing after all those beat up shoes...

Get cotton clothes from thrift store.  When no longer needed, tear the cotton and put it at the bottom of potting plants, instead of suggested coffee filters.
Win/Win!

This is a fun exercise.
Sell eggs to people in egg cartons, which they return to us as they buy more eggs, which they take home in those cartons.
Scavenge nice empty liquor bottles from a friend, turn them into plant waterers for garden plants.
All garden waste goes to chickens, who lay eggs.  Eggs eaten or sold to people who saved egg cartons.  Eggshells and chicken poop go back to garden with happy plants watered with scavenged bottles.

Just be cautious about overdoing it if you do this with potted plants - you can over-salt them.  Moderation and/or a decent flush occasionally with normal water is called for (or ignore all of this if you get tons of rain regularly).  In-ground, go to town, unless maybe you're in a particularly arid climate.

I shower and eat breakfast (I'm spoiled - it's free) at work after biking there.  I prefer eating after exercise anyway, so does this count as a triple win? :)

Of course, unless you are hitting Starbucks for breakfast and coffee.

Maybe it's a quadruple win, since you are also exercising by biking somewhere, instead of spending money to drive to a gym where you can pay money to exercise!
