My 4 year old samsung is really starting to show its age. The battery is getting pretty crappy and it is very slow. I will try and hold out until Christmas time to buy one, but I do see myself having to replace this phone eventually

Finally we have some clarity about when prices will rise:

WalMart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said shoppers will likely start to see increases toward the end of May and more in June.

Video of discussion: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-tariffs-set-to-unleash-double-digit-price-increases-in-some-walmart-departments-cfo-151615476.html

I'm a consultant for a mid-size company that does a lot of product design and distribution for small-format retailers.  Think sunglasses, charging cables, stuffed animals, etc.

They're increasing prices across the board over the next few months.

Their financials are going to look unnaturally good in the back-half of this year due to the nuances of cost accounting.  However, they're going to get squeezed pretty tight in 2026 due to those same rules.

The last four years have been nothing but a squeeze. I look back at my Walmart app and see how much things used to cost. It is truly crazy...

Noticed that my underwear is starting to wear out -- I think I bought this batch 3 years ago or so?  Ordered a new batch of 9 pairs for $55ish.  $20/year for underwear I like seems reasonable.  Might be able to stretch the wear time an extra year or two by using the old wearing out pairs for sweaty stuff like yard work.  And maybe I should start hanging them to dry rather than running through the dryer.

I recently started wearing the new pair of Birkenstocks I bought about 3 years ago.  The version I like tends to last 4-5 years, depending on how conscientious I am about not getting them wet, etc.  I have a pair of Sketchers I need to switch into that I bought last year at Costco -- those should last me a year (or more if I remember to replace the insoles regularly).  I have the washable sandals I bought last year at Costco for dirty stuff, plus a backup pair (got an extra one because I liked them so much).  Wearing those more in summer will also extend the life of the Birks.  Hiking boots and winter footwear are still good.

I think I'm mostly ok for other clothes, though some stuff will probably wear out this season.  My main problem is t-shirts -- I tend to wear holes in them.  The hole-y shirts become garden and/or sleep wear.  I did get a couple of new ones from a friend recently, and the ones I bought last summer don't have holes yet.  So hopefully I can remember to put on the old ones before I do work around the house and keep the newer ones for when I need to be more presentable.

Birks can be pretty much be infinitely repaired/resoled as long as you don't leave maintenance too long. My local cobbler offers much nicer sole options than stock as well as reinforcements for high wear areas.

The particular style that I like has the fake leather uppers, and when I looked into this the cobbler said it wasn't feasible and/or worth the cost (that was about 5 years ago, so my memory of the details is muddy).  I may switch styles with my next pair.

I have resoled a pair of birks and it was worth it. I took them to a local shoe repair store and it cost me ~50 compared to paying for a completely brand new pair

I've started keeping an extra bag of dog kibble on hand.  I used to keep one in reserve so that when we dumped a new bag into the bin, I got a replacement bag about the same time.  Now, I am keeping 2 in reserve.  This is an item that would be rough to just swap for something else, especially given Muppet1's sensitive tummy.  If I can't get their brand, I'd need to very slowly and gradually integrate a new food, and possibly try several before finding one that works well for her, so I want to have the time that 2 bags buys me, rather than 1.

Is it off topic again?
So what happens when Trump just ignores the courts again?
Imports to the US utterly halt and the ships stay parked offshore until it is determined whether a large tariff will be applied or not.

I was watching a video clip of Trump speaking and he called his own tariffs ridiculous. The DOJ has 10 days to appeal and according to the New York Times they think it could be heading to the Supreme Court.

It will get interesting, as scheduled volume to LA has already picked up again, with the temporary reduction to 30% from China.

This reads as nobody knows what the heck is actually going to happen.

Yep.  Not even Trump knows what Trump will do in the future.

I just read about the nickname he's apparently been given on Wall Street in relation to his tariffs: TACO.  Trump Always Chickens Out.

Ha!  When I first heard this acronym in conversation, I thought it was describing the technical analysis, or chart diagram, of what happens when Trump does something crazy.  Market goes down, then he "pauses" it, and the market jumps back up.  The graph looks a little like the side view of an american hard taco shell.  🌮   This makes more sense.

I had made a list of expected house projects earlier this year and got a lot of the supplies. Glad I did so, because prices have gone up. The paint stripper I get went from about $35 a gallon last year to $50 a gallon this week. I'll need one to 2 more gallons this summer. Will get another gallon now, but since I'm not sure how much I'll need will hold off on more.

Ouch. I'm just now starting my house projects and have only bought a fraction of the paint I need - that might not be fun.

I already got my paint, but in your place I would be buying it asap. And any other materials I could, especially if you'd be able to return whatever you don't need. You can buy untinted paint and have it tinted later too.

My 4 year old Samsung phone is on its way out. It doesn't really hold a charge longer than the workday. I am probably going to buy a budget android phone or a model year old Samsung or google pixel.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
