Title: Denver Vaca
Post by: DK on July 09, 2014, 06:51:45 PM
Anyone have any must sees when in the Denver area? Will be headed there for a few days next week. Looks like they have a few craft beer places I would like to check out, as well as New Belgium and Coors around too. Anyone know if the science museum is worth it? Or any good food places to check out?

Hi there.  Denver is a great city.  You didn't say exactly when you would be here but there is a ton to do here.  Not sure your age or what makes you happy but here are a few thoughts.
-Denver Museum of Nature & Science is awesome!  I work there actually and think you should plan to stop by.  You can go to the Denver Zoo, too, which is nearby
-Denver Botanic Gardens - there is a Dale Chihuly glass exhibit in the gardens right now and it is amazing.
These have "free days" every month so check out their respective websites to find out if one is happening while you are here.

New Belgium is actually in Fort Collins and requires advanced reservations.  It is worth your time but just wanted you to know it is not in Denver.  You might consider checking out the Denver beer company in the Highlands.

Have fun.  You will love it.

Nice. July 20th is a free day and will be down there then. Score!

Disappointing about new belgium, they are completely booked. not sure if it would be worth it just to go there, sans tour or not. thanks for the heads up on it.

thanks for the tips.

So it looks like car rental from the airport is ridiculous compared to local places......

Night 1 will be staying at a hotel closer to the airport, do you know if there is a way to get from there to closer to city center to get a better price on a rental?

You can take the bus to downtown Denver for $11 - http://www.rtd-denver.com/skyride.shtml (http://www.rtd-denver.com/skyride.shtml)

SuperShuttle is also an option. $22 to coors field for the 1st person, $12 each additional person.

I was in Denver recently and took the bus (link in above post) to and from the airport.  Worked very well and was quite pleasant.  Takes you right into the heart of downtown.

I live about two hours from Denver. Ditto to the comments on the zoo and the museum - both are really nice and you can easily spend an entire day at each.

Tattered Cover is a really cool bookstore (two locations, both are fun) if you like that sort of thing.

The Cherry Creek Mall area and the 16th Street mall are fun if you like that sort of thing. (but what good mustachian likes fancy, overpriced malls?)

The Ogden Theater is fun, but I don't know what is booked while you are in town.

Budweiser has a big plant in Fort Collins that has free tours (and free samples!). Sometimes the horses are there, too.

I have seen the Denver airport, that's it for Denver proper. The bus system, however, seemed nice 10 years ago and I imagine it still is.

(My trip had me headed to Boulder and then Manitou Springs.)

My guess is the super shuttle would be faster than the bus? I think I might go that route, thanks for the links. I'd be concerned with the bus I'd end up in the wrong spot. I have slim to no experience with public transportation, especially buses.

if you are renting a car, it's definitely worth it to drive down to Colorado Springs for the day.  Stop by the Air Force Academy and visit Garden of the Gods.

Avis has a rental desk at the Doubletree on Quebec Street.  Doubletree offers free shuttle from airport to the hotel.  You don't need to stay at the hotel to use the shuttle.  You can return the car to the airport for no extra charge.  The shuttle picks up at :15 and :45 every hour.  Not sure when the first and last pick up times.
