Title: Custom Made Excel Spreadsheets?
Post by: pcb09 on January 24, 2014, 05:49:03 PM
hey all,

I have heard people on the forums referencing their homemade custom spreadsheets for monitoring their finances and was thinking it would be cool if people would post a copy of them out on the forum.

Spreadsheets containing budget techniques/styles, calculators for growth, time to financial independence, etc...... Graphing capability, etc.... could be very helpful for someone just really getting started on their financial journey.

I would recommend everyone clear out their own data/load it with sample data before posting it out the interwebs.

might be too tough... For example, my spread sheet is just too situation-specific. It has a built-in income tax calculator for Ontario. It plugs in the specific pension contribution rates my spouse and I are required to contribute based on our particular collective agreements, and forecasts our earnings in future years based on those same agreements and salary grids. A lot of the column headings wouldn't make sense to anyone but me. There's a retirement date tailored just for me, and the calculations all change after that point. There's a lot more than that to it, but my point is, any spreadsheet worth having, might be worth making yourself. It's a great exercise for getting to know your finances and how to plan.

Mine is way too specific as well and it would be a bear to genericize. You will learn a huge amount from doing your own because you are forced to think about what you know.

Just lay out a sheet with years as columns and start adding rows for everything you can think of: income, expenses, taxes, mortgages, etc. Add simple formuli which use static variables like inflation, investment returns, etc.  then graph it all up.

My excel budget is a variation of the “Financial Snapshot & Budget”, the first one listed here:

Vertex42 has tons of spreadsheets, from budgets to debt reduction calculators, you name it.
