county jobs
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:38:31 AM »
Hello All,

Just want to know more about county jobs. How does this calpers work? I know they make 2% contribution to our retirement fund, but that's about it. What medical benefits can I get if I retire after 5 years of working in a county. I heard that whatever medical expenses I will be paying in the county while working there, I will keep paying that even after I retire.

Right now, I work for a private company where there is 6% dollar to dollar matching to  401k. I am not sure what is better calpers 2% matching or my own company matching.

Can someone tell me more about County benefits after retirement specially calpers and medical benefits if I work there for 5 years.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

I worked for a county, but my county doesn't contract with CalPERS. Make sure yours does.

I did a search and found this old thread that has much info:

For health insurance check your county's website for employee benefits. Not all of the CalPERS counties contract with them for medical insurance, but they might still offer insurance for retirees. You may have to pay for it out-of-pocket (that might be true of CalPERS insurance also).
