Cost Plus prescriptions
« on: September 05, 2023, 12:17:36 PM »
Has anyone tried or heard anything about the Cost Plus prescription pharmacy?  I take a few generic prescriptions and I've used ExpressScripts through the insurance and this time when I went to order my refills the costs had increased by 250%.  No, that is not a typo.  I called them and the insurance thinking there was an error with my account and no, that is the current price.  I've read about Cost Plus but no one that I've talked to has had any experience with them.  I'm looking for alternatives if anyone has suggestions.  Thanks bunches.

I haven't heard of them.

Costco probably would have a good price, I use them, and I believe the pharmacy has to be available to non members.

I don't know anything about Cost Plus. But I did try out Amazon Pharmacy. Went to get DH's medicine at the supermarket, it was something like $60. Ordered from Amazon Pharmacy and it was free and shipped to my house. I would check it out. I believe you can get an estimate of the cost before fully signing up.

I have been using Cost Plus, and it's been a totally positive experience. I became Medicare eligible this year, and the prescription plans all seem to pretty much suck.  A medication that cost about $50 for a 3-month supply under my former employer-sponsored plan was going to go up to several hundred dollars under my Medicare prescription pan.  With Cost Plus, it is costing me $95 for a 3-month supply.
I had to create an online account, download and complete a form, send it to my MD's office, and ask them to send the form and prescription to Cost Plus.  Then I log into the Cost Plus website and purchase the medication, which is mailed to me. I highly recommend Cost Plus, if your medication(s) is available from them.  That's the one downside; they don't carry everything.

Thank you.  I'm going dig deeper into their offerings.

A bit off topic but are people still getting paper prescriptions? For years I had no trouble shopping around for the best price on various Rx because they were paper. Now my docs have gone to electronic records, so they insist on sending everything to the provider on record. I guess I'm just going to have to price out everything before each visit, and tell them to send different meds to different places. I'm sure they won't like that.

So many pharmacies, at least around here, insist on having the Rx in their system before they'll even price it.  I got a paper script and that didn't even help.  It's ridiculous.

I would have no problem using cost plus drugs if it had the best price on what I needed. It's gotten quite a bit of press and is funded by Mark Cuban. I'm sure it would have been widely covered by now if it was a scam.

Walmart has many generics for $4/30 days or $10/90 days. We had been paying the $10/90 days, but then the same prescription went down to $3.86 when a new plan year started, so our insurance must have renegotiated. Which is to say, it's worth rechecking the insurance covered cost when your plan changes/renews if you don't already have the insurance on record with the pharmacy -- not that the $10 is a big deal if you happen to be on one of the available medications.

https://www.goodrx.com/ is a good place to look up prices, and if you decide to go with one of the pharmacies they show you can sign up for the discount card and use that instead of your insurance if the price is better.

Note that if you select any of these deals that don't go through insurance they won't count towards your deductible.
