Title: Colorado vehicle registration fees - question for Colorado residents
Post by: Trudie on July 31, 2015, 01:33:02 PM
We're considering a relocation to the Denver area -- probably Jefferson county.  About how much do you pay for vehicle registration fees per year?  I know there's a complex formula, but I'd just like to get a ballpark on what people pay.  (list the make, model and year of your car)

The reason I ask is that some states that have reasonably low taxes (like Colorado) can sometimes gouge you with fees.

Thanks.

I live in thornton, north of Denver by about 15 min - I pay $ 550 a year for registration - 2015 Honda fit. It's a bit higher than most places that Colorado is surrounded by. A co-worker just paid $ 1200 for his 2014 bmw m3! Crazy!

As a point of comparison, we live in Iowa now and pay $130 to register a 2007 Honda Fit and $250 to register a 2009 Hyundai Sonata.

I know these are late model cars... but I'm sure we'd be surprised in Colorado.

This isn't a deal-breaker, just a cost I'm trying to estimate.  Your property taxes are less than half what we currently pay.  And state income taxes are lower in Colorado as well.  In the big scheme, we'd come out way ahead.

Yes from what I've heard our property tax is less here (substantially less than some other states - California is outrageous!). It's expensive to register a car but we don't have a lot of other crap like the state inspection to pass - that can be expensive from I have heard. A lot of the east coast still has this. Here you get emissions on your car, register and insure and light up a big fat dooby (lol I don't smoke weed fyi)

$175 for a ~2011 Forester (it's a PZEV, which might make it cheaper, not sure), $70 for a 2001 Impreza.

BTW, Subaru is pretty much the official car manufacturer for the state. You'll have to buy a couple if you want to stay. ;)

Trudie the big difference between CO and IA is Iowa has higher taxes (income) and possibly higher property (at least DSM vs longmont) whereas CO has lower taxes but higher user fees. I live in boulder county my 2005 Ford Focus cost $77 to register and $25 for emissions.

About $70 for my 99 Accord in the Denver city limits. I did not have to pay for emissions inspections this year, which would have been more.
