Change in Career Path Advice Needed
« on: July 20, 2015, 03:54:41 PM »
I'm hoping to get some advice here from all you smart people for my younger brother.  He is really discouraged in his current position and I'd like to help point him to a new path but I'm not sure what that path might be.

He has a bachelor's degree in accounting and is currently working in severance/sale/use tax at an O&G company.  He hates being inside at a desk all day with minimal interaction with people and is generally discouraged because he's been working really hard (overtime) and not being compensated for it as promised. Before going to college he laid asphalt for a couple of summers and was considered to be a leader on his crew.  I think the following characteristics would be ideal for him in a position but I don't know what kind of title that would be:

 - maybe construction/engineering related. He's great with business type math and comprehension but not great with engineering calculus type math. He is great at conceptualizing designs, maps, etc.
-  maybe travel to job sites and assess progress, % completion, etc. Actual to Budget, etc.
- he's very personable
- he's very good at data manipulation in Excel and other programs. He can make a macro in excel for pretty much anything.
- enjoys driving and flying and wouldn't mind cross country travel at this point in his life.

We looked at a couple of project management positions in the construction field but that didn't seem quite right. Any ideas?

Maybe Data Analytics? Still at a desk, but more interaction with people. Also a more lucrative career field if you are good at it.

Does he have or can he do the CPA? He could become an external auditor. Long hours a couple months a year but he could do something like accounting for manufacturing, where he gets to do inventory of cool robots and stuff. I was once an auditor at NASA and I got to give tours of the satellites. Also better compensated and easier long term than laying asphalt in the hot sun.

Beware, this varies widely from company to company.
