Hi everyone!
I'm honored to be posting on the MMM forums after a few months of reading. Really, you guys are aspiring to some amazing things.
I'm running into the following situation with my job that has me puzzling over what to do. I've tried a few different things but I'm not sure what will work.
I'm almost 24, and I'm in my first job out of college making just under 50k gross. I've been there a year and a half now, and I'd be making better progress with Mustachian goals if I didn't STRONGLY DISLIKE it so much! I hate being a complainypants, it's just that I die a little every day I walk in, and I live for the weekends.
For me, this is no way to live, and I'm trying to find a way out that will better keep my interests, rather than continue doing something that saps me of my energy.
Degree: BA in Economics (not many hard skills gained here unfortunately)
Current job: Consultant in Healthcare IT
Things I like: graphs, Excel, reading, lots of other nerdy things
Things I don't like: babysitting clients, organizing projects
Other jobs I've had: Intern at a State Senate, Math Tutor for College Algebra, Intern at a company I loved but haven't found a job at :-(
I'm considering--getting an Engineering degree (1st two years+ at a Community College to save money--there are some obvious drawbacks to this plan)
Learning some coding--I'm starting a class in January that will help me start
I like to solve puzzles. Are there any like-minded of you out there, that can help me think of potential future jobs/careers? I'm looking to stay in the KCMO area.

What, no life-changing advice OR punches to the face?? Are y'all getting soft?
(I'm just kidding.) Anywhoos, I have to go to bed before total sleep madness hits. On a side note, I discovered Codecademy at ~2AM... it seems much easier to use than Treehouse. (I had signed up for a free month of Treehouse, will now maybe be cancelling it before that charge hits.) The class I'm taking that starts mid-January is a Basic Programming class in C#.
Advice greatly appreciated... working full time + taking a class or two has been a real drain on my energy and mood. I'm sure some of you had dealt with this before? How did you cope, and how did you move to the next step in your career?

Like puzzles, and have experience teaching. Are you good at standardized tests? I worked for Kaplan Test Prep for seven years, and still would if I had any time between work, classes, and kids. You have to be able to score in the 90th percentile on a practice or real standardized exam - I taught GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. It's super flexible. You sign up for a given class or tutoring student, so the commitment is pretty low. I varied from teaching a few hours a month when I had a lot going on to teaching 20+ hours a week, and eventually got offered a FT job. You can teach live classes or online. Might be something to look into as a side hustle. The thing I loved is that I moved 4 times in those seven years and just transferred each time.

Career burn out @ 24 huh? Maybe you should just try changing jobs first. You haven't tried any new jobs and I'm guessing you haven't interviewed for any either right? You were't an engineer at the company you loved & you're still trying to find a job there.
Oh and btw, most working people live for the weekends.
I think you are in a good position to have a job of some worth. Many college grads are waiting tables wondering if their time/money spent on college will ever pay off.

This is really funny to revisit 8 years later. I did indeed eventually get a different job as a software developer (later software engineer) at the same company as my first day job. Couldn't figure out how to leave said company until 2019 because I was an expert in proprietary crap at that company. BUT I took a $10 an hour job helping as an assistant at a web development bootcamp in 2016, which helped me make it to a software development consultancy in 2019. I was there for 2 years doing mostly frontend work. Now I am a backend engineer at a really cool company and I work from home. Never underestimate long-term resolve I guess. And yes, even with a job I like, the weekend is still preferable to the week.
